That should keep her interested in it well into her teen years.

keep the action as low as possible. the less sore fingers more likely to practice. also find some songs they like and can learn. scales and musci books get boringf

That's the best advice possible. I don't know what brand you bought, but do have the guitar set-up properly. A 25 to 35 buck investment right now might make the difference of your child's life. Nothing is worse than a guitar that has not been set-up; it is very painful. Use light strings too! Just call the music store and they will point you right. I use Rusty Strings at Stella's Music Emporium in Greenville.

I don't know if you know anything about music, but here are my suggestions. First, buy a capo. You can put this on the second fret and make it a lot easier for her to finger the chords. Next, teach her to play G, E minor, C, and D. These are all in the key of G. With those chords and a capo, she can play a LOT of songs. Just move the capo to change keys. Once she learns to play a song or two, then she can move on to some of the more difficult chords. I've seen too many kids try to learn too much at once, get bored and quit.

If she is like my son thre is no need to encourage her. My son got his first around 5 or 6 and now as about 7 guitars that he bought himself. Some are electric and some are acoustic and he loves playing them all!

My son is now 19

I am a musician. Almost all of these tips are good advice, especially the one about getting it set up properly at a music store, lighter strings, etc.

I think the biggest help is to find someone who can teach a her a few lessons on the guitar. If she has any interest at all, lessons will help her be able to play some songs which will generate even more interest. A good teacher will pick songs on her level that she will enjoy.

Nice gift.

Merry CHRISTmas!

Lessons

Dec 15, 2012, 5:35 PM

Lessons with someone that will be her "friend" and not her "teacher". Local music, etc.
Once she starts playing a bit, take her to a Guitar Center. You can sit down and play any guitar, on any amp, with any pedal, for as long as you want. They give you free picks too. Let her check out all the cool stuff you can do, let her talk to the staff, who are always really awesome... just get her exposed to guitars and the people that play them. If she is interested and keeps talking about them, tell her you'll upgrade her to a better one.
