I'm pretty sure there's a consensus on this. The rankings are only there for TV.

If we beat nobodies in the first 3-4 weeks, who cares about rankings? But if we beat Georgia or FSU in the first few weeks, then we really do care.

I keep hearing this, but in reality it still doesn't make sense. Because how do you know who is good 3-4 weeks in? You can't just go solely on the eye test all year long.

For instance, how do you know what's a Goodwin 3-4 weeks in? Because you have a bias towards what looks like a good team based on recruiting and everything else. As long as it isn't a mathematical formula like the NFL, you will be relying on a bias human at some point during the year. People think "well we will know how good some teams are based on who they've beat 3-4 weeks in." But how do you know how good those teams are? How do you know a body of work is better than another with zero way to apply a ranking or value to them? There is no strength of schedule because that relies on human placed perceived values. People just see wrong rankings and think "if we did it a different way it would fix it". No it wouldnt.
