Questions about our baseball schedule

May 29, 2012, 12:04 PM

Anyone know why we usually play two games each year against Elon? What's the connection there? I understand that they are a regional team, but at two games a year, we're playing them more than almost every in state school other than South Carolina.

Furthermore, almost every in state school pops up on the schedule at least every 2-3 years except the Citadel, which we haven't played since 2004. Any reason why we don't schedule them?

Clemson routinely plays....

Furman, Wofford, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, and Winthrop in addition to South Carolina which accounts for a healthy portion of the in-state schools.

You left out PC and Chas. Southern. Note that we RARELY go to any of those locations. WE play Furman at Fluor, but that's almost like a home game too.

Why travel mid week when other teams are willing to come to us?

My GUESS is that the Citadel would prefer to stay closer to home for mid-week games, or would insist on a home and home arrangement, which we have no reason to agree to.

In the last 4 years we've played each in state school other than the Citadel - Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Furman, Presbyterian, South Carolina, USC Upstate, Winthrop, and Wofford, but haven't played The Citadel in 8 years, I just found that odd.

Also, in the last four years we've played Elon 8 times, which is more than any instate school other than South Carolina - 13 times in regular season, and Furman - also 8 times.

Obviously we have the home & home with Georgia which is a great rivalry, and we've got the home & home with Western Carolina because of Jack's connection, but the 2 games a year with Elon seemed odd, unless there was some connection there that I was not aware of.

Maybe its just as simple as they are willing to come and the Citadel is not.

Because they're willing to come to Clemson midweek twice a year.

Don't we usually play Elon on the way to some other game

And Elon is closer than The Citadel. I think the NCAA has travel limits on week night games. Conway and Charleston are over 4 hours from Clemson.

We always play Elon at home

May 29, 2012, 12:16 PM

Don't know why, maybe it is b/c they're willing to play 2 days in a row. Maybe the Citadel wants a return game to play us that we won't do. Really though, I have no clue.
