Biggest loss to replace on defense?

Feb 15, 2016, 6:09 PM

To me it's BJ Goodson. He was a run stuffing machine and had surprisingly good coverage skills. Tre Lamar and Shaq Smith will eventually be great, but I think it will take a full season to adjust to the college game and scheme. IMO, Kendall Joseph must take a big step forward this year. If not, that could become a huge hole to fill.

Hard to think of anyone other than Alexander. Not having to worry about half the field in man coverage changes every level of a defense

That helped the DL too

With Mack locking down one side it forced QB's to hold the ball longer too. This allowed Lawson and Dodd to get sacks that came off or persistence. Of course the same can be said about the secondary. They saw a lot of poorly thrown balls due to our DL being in the face of QB's all the time.As they say the pass is predicated off the run, a good pass rush is many times depending on good coverage. Also in this case seemingly good coverage depending a good pass rush.

But, IMO the biggest hole to fill is Dodd. We always have a good pass rusher on the right side. Dodd's ability to torture RT's on the opposite side of the line, set the edge against screens, options and outside runs did far more than can be seen in a stat sheet. He and Lawson were a wrecking crew and you'd be hard pressed to find a pair that was more productive in the last decade, anywhere.

"Punt Passes" QB throws that look more like a
punt than a pass. Throwing it up for grabs
before the rush collapses on top of him.
A lot of those in the Miami game.

Absolutely. He stays in against Bama, we win.***

Re-watch the National Championship and the answer is clear. Alexander, hands down.

Agree, has to be Mack. He opened up so much of the defensive playbook

Alexander! No question.

He shut down his side of the field on every play. He will be missed.
GO TIGERS !!!

Alexander by a landslide!!!

Hard to form a game plan (opposing coaches) when one side of the field is off limits!

"Bama" fans can thank the football gods that they got a 2nd half GIFT when MA went out! Fact!

Lawson

No pressure on QB and 5 great db's will eventually let a guy get open.

Yeah, no.

IMO DL is easily the most important part of a modern defense. It doesn't matter how good you are at the back end if the QB has all day to throw or if you can't clog up running lanes and disrupt blocking schemes. Lawson was strong against the run and the pass so he's my choice. He's also just way more talented and way better at his position than Goodson. No offense to him, but Shaq was an AA is going to be a 1st rounder.

I'd go with Mack 2nd.

Alexander or Lawson, but WE TOO DEEP!***
