a little history on Clemson and Notre Dame basketball...

for all those wringing hands and popping veins over Notre Dame winning the ACC.

This is surprising why exactly?

In all, Notre Dame has made 33 appearances in the Big Dance before this year. Clemson has made all of 11. In fact, Notre Dame made 16 appearances on the Road to the Final Four prior to Clemson ever getting into the NCAA's.

Notre Dame has 15 Sweet Sixteen appearances. Clemson 3.

Notre Dame has been to the Elite Eight 5 times. Clemson made it in their very first trip to the NCAA's in 1980 and haven't been back since.

Notre Dame has 1 Final Four appearance (thank you Adrian Dantley, and that isn't Rocky's girlfriend). Clemson nada.

Now a fair part of this disparity is because Notre Dame played as an Independent for much of its history, while Clemson was put through the chokehold of the ACC tournament yearly. This explains why Clemson never made it to the NCAA's until they expanded the NCAA field, and began accepting more than one team from the conference. Previously only the Conference Tournament winner got not the field. You'll also note that this week's win was the first conference championship ever for Notre Dame, never previously traversing that particular gauntlet.

It's called "Brand", and Notre Dame, even as a football school, has a significantly higher Brand value than Clemson in basketball. And likely they always will.

Now as to baseball... hmmm...

One nit. Adrian Dantley did not play on ND's final four team. Dantley was a hell of a player, but played for the Irish from 1973-76. ND's final four team was in 1978.
