Since it’s come up again, here we’re go.

Growing up there was a girl, Ruth, up the street that was a couple of years younger than me that was part of the neighborhood gang of kids that ran together She had a broad face and an interesting speech pattern but heck, Albert had a stutter, Bobo had a limp, and Jean was kind of cockeyed so we didn’t think much of it.

One day we went by her house to get Ruth to play and her dad said she would be gone for a few days to the hospital to get something taken care of.

A couple of days later we found out that something had gone wrong and she died.

I was 13 and Ruth was 11.

My mother told me later that Ruth’s parents had taken her to get a hysterectomy because her breasts had started to show and they were worried Ruth wouldn’t say no if some boy (s) wanted to “do things” and Ruth would end up pregnant
She died of complications from the surgery.
Lots of parents said it was sad but “those people” don’t live long anyways
Made my mother very angry and still makes me sad
