Re: Draftees by conference

There's a reason the SEC has more players taken and despite what the coots and SEC homers say its has more to do with numbers then talent.

This is from the ACC Football RX Blog;

Let me just get to the point - the ACC will appear to do poorly in this year's draft.  Some sports writers will say this is evidence of how weak ACC football has become relative to the SEC.  They will be misinformed.

You see, without knowing anything else, I can already tell you with confidence that there will be something like twice as many SEC players drafted as ACC players.  Why?  Simple - it's a numbers game.

Here is a count of seniors who were invited to the NFL combine - we'll just focus on the ACC, Big Ten (B1G) and SEC since these are the 2 "Eastern" conferences..
ACC: 47 seniors
B1G: 38 seniors
SEC: 81 seniors
I didn't count all seniors because some of them have no intention of playing professional football, and some others have no shot at making it anyway.

Next are the underclassmen who declared for the draft - the ACC had very few this year.
ACC: 6 declarees
B1G: 8 declarees
SEC: 33 declarees

Add them all up to get the total number of players in the NFL draft pool.
ACC: 47 seniors + 6 declarees = 53
B1G: 38 seniors + 8 declarees = 46
SEC: 81 seniors + 33 declarees = 114

Will all 114 SEC players get drafted?  Probably not, but neither will the 53 from the ACC nor the 46 from the B1G.  The point is, this year's NFL draft is flooded with former SEC players, so I would expect more of them to be picked.  That doesn't mean the ACC doesn't produce a comparable number of NFL players over the long haul (or that the ACC won't be more improved this Fall thanks to the returning upperclassmen).  Interestingly enough, the ACC very well may still produce more NFL talent than the B1G - even in a year when so few came out early.

BOTTOM LINE:

Just don't have unrealistic expectations.  And don't let them get to you when they point out that the SEC has more draftees this year.

Why are there so many quality underclassmen who

declared for the Draft from the SEC though? That has as much to do with quality as anything. You have to look at % based on total eligible players for each conference. I don't have the numbers, but I'll try to get back to you on that.

Thanks. I can't believe how dominant the sec has become! Seems like all the great players are there.
