We played two decent / good opponents OOC this year

Nov 26, 2022, 9:52 PM

And lost to both. We got blown out at ND and lost at home to SC as 2 TD+ favorites. Both miserable performances in their own right, riddled with turnovers, special teams mishaps, bad offensive play, etc. All of which has become the norm, not the exception, over the 2nd half of the season.

DJ really did look better earlier in the season, but it is possible that was just a product of an easier schedule. Lately DJ has looked exactly like 2021 DJ throwing the football. We also weren't committing boat loads of turnovers earlier in the season. Was that luck, was it also a product of the schedule, or have DJ and the entire offense just regressed and lost confidence over the last month or so?

Really the bottom line is that there has been no year-over-year improvement from 2021 to 2022. Currently the only meaningful difference in our overall record is that Georgia wasn't on the schedule this year. The advanced metrics have really been saying that for most of the season, but, until now, our record wasnt really reflective of their assessments. This has really been a 9-3 / 10-2 quality team based on on-field play, masquerading as a playoff contender until the mask was finally ripped off in painful fashion by our bitter rival today.

The defense is still pretty good, but has clearly regressed from last season when we had, arguably, the 2nd best unit in the country. The offense has clearly not made up for the defensive slide. Earlier in the season it seemed like it had, but that's definitely evaporated. Unless we clean some things up, there's a pretty high likelihood that we get pasted in a NY6 bowl against a quality opponent. That's assuming we can get past UNC and actually get into the NY6, which is far from a given right now despite the Heels having their own late-season slide.

Obviously we need to fix the QB position, but do yall really feel like we are just one competent QB away from being a legit playoff contender again? I can't say I really do.

Agreed

We are near the bottom of the country in generating explosive plays on offense for the 2nd year in a row. It's tough to be a successful offense when you can't hit big plays. Trying to grind your way down the field is very difficult because any mistake or negative play can effectively kill a drive.

Did you see Etienne's brother burn FSU to tie the game last night. I miss those kind of plays.

This USC team wasnt that good

Nov 26, 2022, 9:57 PM

We were worse. They studied and got significantly better these last two games after some bad losses earlier in the year.

Our problems are systemic.

Nov 26, 2022, 9:59 PM

Blaming DJ for all of our issues is ridiculous.

Our issues start with coaching. We have top 5 talent but that talent is not developed well nor is that talent put in position to succeed. Our offensive game plan is vanilla. Players don’t get open. We are asking DJ to make throws he shouldn’t have to make. Sometimes he makes them, and sometimes he doesn’t. But how often are our receivers truly open?

How much variety do we see in plays called? We rarely attack the middle of the field. We have no motion/eye candy. We don’t run up tempo. We don’t run jet sweeps or reverses. Nothing is done to shake things up or keep defenses honest.

We are not a well coached team. We lack attention to detail. We don’t play disciplined football. That is true for offense as well as defense.

We have an incredible amount of talent on defense too, but we haven’t come close to living up to expectations. And that’s been against mostly pedestrian offenses. Can you imagine if we played a high powered offense?!?

We aren’t getting our money’s worth for our coaching staff that is among the highest paid in the country.

Our WR corp is not top 5. Our oline is not top 5

Our secondary is not top 5.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We have top 5 talent overall.

Nov 26, 2022, 10:45 PM

We’ve had multiple top 5 recruiting classes the last few years.

This includes very highly ranked recruits at WR, RB, and QB, at or near the top of their respective positions coming out of high school.

We also have multiple 5 star players on defense.

The talent is there, unless you’re saying that our coaches are victims of the most flawed recruiting rankings ever and our highly touted classes actually aren’t that good.

Most of those top recruits have been busts or transferred.

We have guys that were good when they were 16 but suck at 20

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wrong your honor. Out talent is mediocre.

Nov 26, 2022, 10:06 PM [ in reply to Our problems are systemic. ]

Besides Trotter, who would start at his position on a top ten team?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Kj Henry, healthy Tyler Davis and healthy Breese maybe murphy

Nov 26, 2022, 10:18 PM

No one on offense which is the problem.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Since when do we have mediocre talent?!?

Nov 26, 2022, 10:47 PM [ in reply to Wrong your honor. Out talent is mediocre. ]

Do we need to go back and review our last few recruiting classes? They are all among the best in the nation.

And please don’t act like they were overrated. Everyone here was not bashful about saying “we too deep” while bragging on how great Dabo & Co. recruit.

From rivals

Nov 27, 2022, 7:48 AM

2022 ranked 10th one 5 star klubnik
2021. Ranked 6th Wr Troy stellato, yet to see field 4 star
2020 ranked 2nd Demarcus Bowman 5 star gone
2019 ranked 9th Andrew Booth- already in NFL, no help this year. ngata 5 star bust, frank ladson 4 star bust, Bryton Constantine 4 star hurt.

We have no breakaway speed on offense

Re: From rivals

Our ranking as a team is generally brought down by having fewer recruits. Up until last year, it was the norm for us to be in the top 5 for the average rating on the recruits.

Ruke would start on most top 10 teams and when everyone is healthy he is a backup here. Trenton Simpson is a Butkus award finalist and most likely Barrett Carter and Trotter will be on the list next year. Makuba was preseason all American by some services. Myles Murphy seems to have regressed but early this year he was projected as a top 10 pick in the draft. Henry has played well all year and has probably earned a draft spot in the later rounds. The idea that our talent is mediocre, especially, on defense is ludicrous. Even on offense, nearly every starter is a 4 or 5 star recruit. The recruiting services were not wrong on all of them.

I will agree with you. A friend of mine commented after the game that we did not throw a pass between the hash marks all game. And I added we did not target Davis Allen all game either.

The INT towards the end of the game was to Allen, but I agree with you. Nothing over the middle except a couple slants that were dropped

Yeah we did and he stumbled on his route resulting in a huge pick

2. We didn't get blown out last year

I agree with all of this. I think yes, having even just an average QB would fix a lot of our problems. Having another stud or 2 at WR would not hurt. But I feel like Williams is already an Artavis Scott/Amari Rodgers level talent and I think Randall has a lot of potential.

Re: We played two decent / good opponents OOC this year

To elaborate at our depth problem at WR... when EJ got pulled for a terrible play (happens to every position on the field but QB for some reason... not just Clemson), Drew Swinney was the next man up.

Spector played horrible, Ngata played horrible, EJ played horrible. And we were VERY lucky on the swing pass to Mukuba b/c it was behind the LOS and should have been a fumble.

Not saying DJ is the problem. He is part of the problem on offense. But freshman QBs start on many teams in football. There are growing pains, but you can't develop in practice. You need live rounds and reps to truly see plays develop. The view standing behind the LOS is different than bird's eye view from the film room.

We have the number one QB out of high school with another one just as good coming in next year. If DJ gave us our best chance to win, that does not bode well to our QB development.

Yep. We are staring at 10-4 right now which would be worse than last season. The fact we won a couple we should/could have loss makes the reality of this season even more pathetic since we haven't lost to a single team with more talent on their roster. I mean we can throw shade at someone like Doeren but his team came out with their fourth string QB and fought hard for a road win against a higher ranked opponent. This team can't even do something like that with our starting QB. No fight whatsoever.

USC and ND are decent but not even top 20 material. Glad we swapped Wofford for UGA.
