RE: Unionization

Mar 27, 2014, 4:11 PM

I don't think any of your are in a position to understand what student athletes are going through in today's climate of academics/athletics. So please keep that in mind before opening your mouth.

has academics/athletics changed in 20 yrs?

Mar 27, 2014, 4:18 PM

the only thing that has changed is the ncaa is making more money. Nothing has changed on the athlete side.

You go to school. You go to practice and games.

Actually, they have it a little easier now. Only 20 hrs allowed. They practiced a lot more than 20 hrs 20 yrs ago.

Lets not lump all student athletes together

Mar 27, 2014, 4:20 PM

Football and men's basketball student athletes are the ones generating the money, so that's where some thought needs to go into making sure the system works. The NCAA may have lost its chance to address that by letting this get to the courts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they aren't generating money

Mar 27, 2014, 4:23 PM

they are just lucky that the general populace is more interested in their sports. They don't do any more work than a golf, tennis, volleyball, softball etc. athlete.

Quantity of work

Mar 27, 2014, 4:27 PM

does not correlate to the demand for a product. Society values certain skills or entertainment more than others. So a softball athlete, regardless of how much they work, there isn't a great demand for their product. So they aren't nearly as valuable to a sports program.

The NCAA basically exists to try to artificially pretend that all athletes are the same and should get the same benefits. But the market of viewers and fans, and for that matter coaches (with their different salaries), certainly doesn't see it that way.

Re: RE: Unionization

They want to form a union that's fine, want to be treated as employees great, then treat them just like any other employee.
Don't think many of them will like giving up all the FREE stuff or having to pay taxes on the employee benefits.
Most in the real world of being a union employee have priced themselves out of a job.
Us as fans have more say than some would like to admit we hold the pen that writes the checks.
Not too long ago a coach at Clemson found out real quick about the power of the purse.

They also have a better meal plan than regular students.

Unionization will end the silly "arms race"

Mar 27, 2014, 4:54 PM

We will no longer be building indoor football facilities in places where it snows less than 5 days a year.

We will no longer have NFL style locker rooms.

We will no longer take plane rides. It will be more like the minor league bus rides. (This could hurt teams like TX A&M, Mizzou, Maryland, and S. Carolina)

All of this will have to end assuming the 85 member football team wants to be paid about $3 million dollars total a year (approximately $30,000 each).

In order to come up with $3 million dollars a year, the coaches will have to take a pay cut, and the "arms race" will have to end. Maybe the fans will have to pay a little extra too.

Now that is funny

Mar 27, 2014, 5:36 PM

Unless you really believe what you posted.

What is so funny about it? Paying collegiate players will

Mar 27, 2014, 5:40 PM

be the end of college football. About 30 schools will survive, Clemson most likely will, but will perennially be one of the worst.

Cole @ Beach Cole w/ Clemson Hat

I wonder if some people (maybe you) think that

Mar 27, 2014, 7:18 PM [ in reply to Now that is funny ]

CU Athletic Dept has millions of dollars lying around in the bank.

I can assure you that any extra money CU Athletics has, is spent on the "arms race" - new locker rooms, indoor practice facilities, a bidding war for the best coaches money can buy, etc.

CU Athletics is hurting for money so bad that they had to cut sports like wrestling and men's swimming just so they could stay competitive with their neighbors in Athens and Columbia.

South Carolinians do not like unions to start with.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

While I won't speak for student/athletes, and I don't

Mar 27, 2014, 5:55 PM

purport to understand exactly with what they have to contend, I do understand people.

Once we pay one, all will demand fair and equitable treatment, regardless of the sport.

Strong, effective leadership within the NCAA should have anticipated this movement long ago and addressed it decisively. Now, I believe the U.S. Supreme Court will.
