Thoughts on playing "cupcakes"

Sep 14, 2012, 12:11 AM

While many talking heads blast the idea of big schools playing little schools, I actually like it. I think both schools reap major benefits and taking those away will hurt both the teams and the fanbases.

Thoughts?

I, too, like the idea of playing "cupcakes". I would like to see the "big" teams schedule the "cupcakes" early in the year, almost like preseason games. I also think that the "big" teams need to try and only play the smaller schools from their state, ie Clemson playing Furman, Coastal Carolina, Wofford, etc. This would allow the smaller schools a chance to make a lot of money and their relatively small fan base would not have to travel great distance to support their team.

I think this year's schedule is the perfect balance. A good, solid game to open the year followed by two relatively easy wins. That allows you to keep the kids focused through spring and summer camps and also a bump in recruiting. Also, it gives you two games to work out the kinks at full speed rather than practice.

1 is okay. I'm not crazy about playing two especially since we typically have a couple more built into the ACC schedule every year, but unfortunately, with teams wanting the gate revenue for home games it's become the norm.
