Thoughts on 2017 Tiger Baseball

Jun 14, 2016, 4:25 PM

From what I have heard from Coach Lee this past week the lineup is going to look like:
C- Williams
1B- Beer
2B- Byrd
SS- Davidson
3B- Cromwell
LF- Rohlman
CF- Pinder
RF- Jackson
DH- Bryant
Rotation:
1. Krall
2. Barnes
3. Eubanks
4. Crawford
5. Higginbotham
I can not wait for this season! This team is stacked! We are so deep at every position now! We won't have the same problems as this past year!

Pitching may actually be the strongest part of the 2017 team, which is kind of shocking.

Krall is a stud, but I love Barnes and Eubanks, they definitely showed flashes of future dominant pitchers. Higginbotham will be filthy if he consistently spots his offspeed/breaking stuff like he spots his fastball and Gilliam showed signs of being a good arm going forward as well. Crawford is a bullpen guy in my mind, but he could definitely start midweek, maybe even Sundays. I think there are plenty of good pitchers on this staff, it just comes down to reps and having the confidence to attack hitters, which is sometimes tough for a young guy to do when you're facing a Corey Ray, Cal Raleigh, Will Craig, or some of these other big bats in the ACC.

GREAT POST. HEARING CRAWFORD MAY BE GROOMED AS THE CLOSER.

I'd love that.

Don't forget, I believe Drew Moyer will be back. Heard he was ready to play next year.

I hope so, he wasn't on the roster this season which to me means "not healthy enough to play" and he either wanted to take a year away without wasting eligibility or he may be completely toast. I hope not, he was a great talent.

the arms are getting better, no doubt...

Jun 14, 2016, 5:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Thoughts on 2017 Tiger Baseball ]

but we're going to really, really miss Okey

One thought on the "attacking the hitters" idea though.

I prefer the idea of "attacking a spot" better,

though I am not sure there's really a major difference.

But I did note that our guys tended to miss high a lot (I'll leave out my perceptions of who though).

I wish they were taught more to pound specific spots

such that you could teach them to "always miss low".

I'll never forget Ted Williams talking about how

even he couldn't consistently hit down and away...

Same general idea, but I like how you phrased it. Just have to go after guys, you aren't going to get outs when pitching around people.

"Missing low" - That's why the pitch to the string in the bullpen sessions. Missing high isn't usually planned and pitching to contact is encouraged. This squad is young in age and experience and will only get better over the next few seasons. The defense has to be better and the hitting needs to improve as well.

I heard that. But those guys probably won't get the starting job. 2B battle is in between Byrd and Jackson. RF battle is in between Jackson and Bryant. Byrd and Jackson are the favorites

Jermon Green will make a strong case for a starting spot...

Dude would obviously be better from the 2B position and given the fact that he can give you a good quality AB helps too....

Its going to be competitive to say the least...in a good way

Who was the young pitcher that started a game late in the season with a NASTY breaking ball? He got run off after a few innings because of control problems, but when it was on that pitch was scraight up NASTY.
