Texas A&M game

I think most would agree that the second game of the year is a huge game. Maybe the toughest regular season game of the year. Personally i think thats the case. I saw one one source mention that A&M had only 4 returning starters on D. Is that true?
If so, i think thats huge for us early in the year. Being game 2, huge edge to Clemson. We might be able to hittem in the mouth early.

I see it as A&M having to play us the second game of the season, and I'm positive that their fans are feeling, OMG, we're having to play Clemson our 2nd game of the season!!!!

I agree this will most likely be the biggest test and important game since it is so early in the season. Yes, A&M lost a lot on defense to the NFL. I looked at it the other day, they literally lost I think 2 DL and 3 LB's to the NFL. They also graduate 1 from their secondary. The only thing about that is we lost just as many, but I am thinking the have not recruited as well as us. Plus they lost their big time RB on offense. And thankfully it is in Death Valley this year! Hopefully with all these factors we come out with a win!

I also heard they didn't lose much on offense. So they will probably score some points but should not be able to stop us.

They lost their starting RB and big-time TE from last year, both of whom put up some big numbers. I think our offense vs. their young defense will be an advantage when compared to their offense vs. our young defense. Proven play-makers matter this early in the season and we bring back a LOT on offense - more than them. As long as we go out and play to our potential, and I know we have had the tendency to start slow, then we should be fine.

There will always be excuses. when we beat them, if it is by more points than Bama, the excuse will be that A&M had not matured enough yet or that they were still learning the system, etc.

You never elect to play defense first. You defer. If you elect to kick off then they still get to choose in the second half and we end up kicking again. Sorry if it sounds like a nitpicky reply but I've seen it happen.

remember the clemson game years ago where somebody on the other team didn't say "defer" but said, "we'll kick off," and discovered that by the rules of football, that meant they had decided to kick off at the start of both halves? I wonder if that poor guy is done running stadium stairs yet.

In terms of starting production, A&M lost 2 DL (Kingsley and Mack), 2 LB (Alaka and Dodson) and 1 Safety (Wilson).
On offense, they lost a RB (Williams), TE (Sternberger) and Center (McCoy).
Much like Clemson, everyone that is replacing them were in the rotation/have lots of experience, and in some cases you are seeing 5 star Freshman or Sophomores step into the starting position. As we all know, stars mean jack #### if they don't produce, but I'm confident in the guys stepping in on D.
Dlinemen Madubuike, Leal (5 star Freshman) and Peevy were all nationally recruited by the big guys. Clemons was hurt for most of last year, but he is A&M's speed "length" end and is built very similar to Ferrell with long length. Anthony Hines (LB) was also injured last year, but he is fully healed and is a former 5 star LB recruit. He will start opposite of Buddy Johnson (Senior).
The secondary is the biggest ? due to the intense battle with the 4/5 star Freshman that came in and the veterans. I expect at least one Freshman to start, and I expect that will be at Safety (Demani Richardson). 5 star Leon O'Neal (Sophomore) will start. Hard hitter, but I'm curious how he will handle Clemson's passing attack. That's not an easy task for a young buck.
I'm not worried about the offense at all. OLine remains 80% intact and they got stronger throughout the year last year. 4* Corbin takes over for Williams. He's a lot faster than Williams, although I have no visions of him being the pass protector Williams was, which is often overlooked by fans.
Sternberger will be replaced by two 4* guys in Wydermeyer and Beal. One is a Soph and one is a True Freshman. Baylor Cupp, the 5* True Freshman TE, broke his leg last week.
I certainly don't EXPECT A&M to win this game in Death Valley, but I don't think you beat the brakes off of the Aggies either. I'm expecting a score of 35-24 give or take a TD to either side.
I'll be in Section D with my wife, so if you see two maroon clad folks in a sea of orange behind the Clemson sideline, that would be us.

PS - I agree with Magnolia... guess we were both typing our thoughts at the same time, but I provided less of a position-by-position analysis. In short, I think we are well coached, but on balance, Clemson has more experience coming back, which will be the deciding factor. I expect Clemson to keep it in front of them, that the game will never be in doubt, but still a respectable loss (e.g. 10-12 pt loss).

Understand all of the positives you are taking from last year and how that correlates to this year, it’s wise to remember a few other facts. Trevor was not the starter yet and only threw 9 passes. Also ET was still sharing more reps, and we really had not seen Ross establish himself yet. The offense that Clemson will field in 2019 will be significantly different from what A&M saw last year at Kyle Field. We are reloading on D, but our weakness last year against A&M was some secondary issues which should be buttoned down more this year. I do think this will be our toughest game, but the Clemson offense you will see in night and day different than you saw in Texas in the fall of 2018.

"Resident Aggie" here...
I've mentioned something similar in previous posts. I'm not conceding the game, but yes, on paper, you guys will "easily" win. It is second year under Jimbo. We saw VAST improvements last year in game prep and coaching, team focus, etc. So Jimbo is by far better than Sumlin. BUT... we don't have a lot of "star returning starters." Personally, I think it will hurt us that our star RB (Trayveon Williams) and TE (Jace Stoernburger) opted for the NFL last year. Our good, but freshman, TE broke his leg in practice last week, and Jimbo's preference is to use TEs a lot. Good news is our receivers will be amazing, but it's probably the ONLY area I give us the edge in over Clemson. And it's not good to be one-dimensional. I think we will be "good" on D, but yes, we have more team building going on there too in Jimbo's second year.
All this is to say YES... You will see a dangerous team visiting you. You SHOULD have it circled. And I for one will enjoy my trip there and am expecting an "interesting" game. Moreso because your fans have been some of the best we ever had the pleasure of hosting in College Station - rabid yet truly enjoyed our overtures to host and were genuinely interested in taking in the spectacle of our traditions in Aggieland. Some of your fans sitting next to me in the Aggie alumni section even gave me a Clemson $2 bill at the end of the game.
But as for the score, I'm expecting the youth of our team to pose some problems for YOU since Jimbo is a good coach. I don't agree with your comments that you now have game tape on a Jimbo led Aggie squad, for the same reasons... many of our players will be new starters, moved around, probably new plays and views because of personnel changes, etc. Mond (QB) will be better, and we will have Kendrick Rodgers back at receiver (injured most of the year last year, saved our arses vs LSU to end the season). But I am expecting this game to be one where Clemson pretty much controls it, not a blow out, but it will be an "interesting but not in doubt" kind of game. Should be fun, even for Aggies visiting as long as we're not expecting a win. And I cannot wait to see the Aggie Band play for you guys.
I agree with the OP that experience of your returning starters will outweigh ours, so that will likely be the difference in this game. We play Texas State the game before, and that won't tell us anything. I wish we were actually playing an Arkansas to prepare for Clemson.
For the record, I will be very happy if we do pull an upset, but I won't actually be shocked.

We have face a Jimbo led teams many times, and our coaches just wanted to confirm Jimbo's coaching style was still the coach of a FSU Jimbo team, and see what changes he has made with leading an A&M team. Don't think that our coaching staff don't know Jimbo and his coaching style bc they do, they just needed to see his direction for A&M, and if it was going to be close to the same as Jimbo in Florida!!!

I will be dissapointed with anything less than a win. We have two stout lines, what should be an improved secondary, amazing WRs (the best collective group of hands Ive ever seen in decades) and a QB that should be on yet another level in yr 2 under Jimbo.
I rewatched last year’s game, and I know for a fact that this Aggie team believes it left a victory on the table last year. I expect an upset- 32-31. Ags are a year ahead of schedule and a year away- 2020 is our year.

Perhaps. If you call this lucky:
A&M had 25 1st downs vs. 14 for Clemson in only their 2nd game under Fisher, running a new offense with a QB that was 2nd string the prior year.
A&M had two turnovers- 1 a fluke 2 yard INT by a DL with a QB that came in for 1 play Mond developed a case of cramps and had to sit out. That was on Clemson's 20yd line or so. The other (critical) a "fumble" that wasn't, wrongly ruled fumbled through the end zone.
In addition to those probably 7 pts, Ags had their extremely accurate FG kicker injure himself on a mis-step missing a 25yd chip shot to open the game. He then had another FG blocked.
That's between 16-20 pts Ags left on the table. I don't think Clemson had any. So, if that's just Mond getting lucky to play Clemson close, so be it.
I'm hoping for a good game.

It is amusing to see how tightly the Aggies cling to the “we wuz robbed” theory on the fumble. Replays are 2 dimensional. The person who was in place to make the call said it went into the end zone before going out. Without a camera pointing “up” at the pylon, one cannot be sure on which side of the pylon it went. Yet EVERY Aggie is “sure” it went out prior to touching the end line. The eye sees what it wants/needs.

“we was robbed” is a little harsh, though i wonder hiw YOU would react.
In any event, we do indeed know it was wrong as a matter of geometry, and a matter of reviewing it from vantage points not used (or discarded) by the review booth. you can draw a straight line from where ball was lost to where it landed, and there’s no possible way it went inside or over the pylon.
nevertheless, that is only one play out of about 6 critical ones any of which might reverse the outcome.
MY POINT IS NOT THAT WE WERE ROBBED, ONLY THAT A&M HAS NO SAYISFACTION IN “KEEPING IT CLOSE”. We’re there to win a football game and i’ll be disappointed if we dont. hope its a clean, fair, game and i believe it may be one of the top games this season.

A couple of points. Your “geometry” argument doesn’t work. 1. Study parallax and get back with me. I have a degree in engineering and I understand it well. A 2 dimensional camera has trouble representing a 3 dimensional world. 2. You asked how I would feel if it was reversed- i’d live with it and sure as #### wouldn’t whine about it for a year as you Aggies have done. I’d say that the game shouldn’t have been that close in the first place and that’s what you get when it comes down to a play that close.

you dont need to get that fancy (although i admit we had our own self- proclaimed engineers evaluate it ...)
all you have to do is mark where the ball was lost and where it landed. you can get thise two points relatively easily. ESPECIALLY if youre an engineer.
Again, not the point of my post . im just a little put off by some felliw aggies here acting like we’ll be fortunate to keep it close. i believe that’s a given.
