Tailgating generator?

Oct 14, 2015, 8:52 AM

Hey guys, I want to get my dad a portable generator for his birthday to take our tailgates to the next level. Anybody have any recommendations? Trying to keep it under $500

TIA!

quiet generator for under $500, unless its at a pawn shop. Honda is the best, those are around $1200.

Try to buy a Honda EU2000i. Quiet $500 generators end up being a waste of money. Sometimes you can find the Hondas on sale at Northern Tools. I paid $950 plus tax for mine and don't regret it one bit.

You can get a used Honda 1000 on craig list

Oct 14, 2015, 8:59 AM

For about $500. If it runs, it is good. you shouldn't worry about getting a used lemon. Brand new Honda 1000 is $800 plus tax.

I don't know how old he is but anYthing over 1000w is pretty heavy.

Buy a Yamaha. Beats Honda on most important stats.

Oct 14, 2015, 10:09 AM

Wouldn't go wrong with a Yamaha.

Problem is there aren't as many Yamaha dealers and servicers around.

Before you buy , make sure one of your local small engine repairs guy is certified to work on Yamaha.

Northern tool use to carry them but doesn't seem to any more.

Exact opposite here. The Honda dealer refuses to work on them, but the Yamaha dealer does and even stocks basic maintenance parts for them. Your point is definitely valid, though. Make sure whatever you buy can be serviced and that you can get parts for it. That holds true with any mechanical purchase, not just generators!

With that being said, I have had the Yamaha for four years now and have never done anything but change the oil and put gas in it.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I also never had to get mine serviced. But as I understand it

Oct 14, 2015, 10:59 AM

Northern tool supposedly has to service anything they sell.

Again. . Never needed to so can't verify that.

Where are you, Who carries Yamaha ? I can't find any one in the Greenville area.

I am in Sumter. I just checked and Powersports of Greenville has them in stock. http://www.powersportsofgreenville.com/default.asp

I agree. I have been a Honda man for a long time, but since about 2005 the tuning fork company is making better products across the board; from generators to motorcycles Yamaha is pushing the tech envelope and quality of old Big Red.

The Accord is still a nice car if you have to drive one. ;)

For tailgating, QUIET is the key. I like the Honda 1000, which is about $800.

If you buying brand new then get the 2000. Double the power for $200 more.

Oct 14, 2015, 9:05 AM

If you can lug it around.

Mine honda generator was stolen because my wife couldn't lift it into my truck. If I had a Honda 1000 or a wife with more than 4 brain cells I would still have a generator.

Start it up before you buy.

I've walked by tailgates with basket ball sized generators that sounded like lawn mowers.

Generac makes a small 800 watt generator....

Oct 14, 2015, 9:03 AM

that sells for about $320.

They also make a 1600 watt generator that sells for about $490.

Young man next to us at the GT game told me he bought the 800w Generac and it couldn't carry the basic load he needed for tailgating and burnt up within 2 months use.

I have a used one for sale. We bought it last year and never used it. You can text me if your interested. It's a Duracell Brand with 2200watts peak and 2000 watts constant. It's maybe been ran 2 hours.

Re: Tailgating generator?

Oct 14, 2015, 9:20 AM

I just purchased a Power-horse 2000 watt from northern tools. Very quiet, cranked right up. Has run 2 tailgates 2 cycle ea. tailgate 16 hrs each. $599.00 researched for a year. Northern tools sells, Honda also.
I spoke with the mechanics who do small engine repairs, they said this company was started by Honda, then sold.
they cranked one up inside the store. the DB is 52 compared to 54 on the Honda. The equivalent Honda is $1199.
Granted it,s not the Honda brand that my tailgate buddy has but he thought it was quieter than his .The mechanics said the parts and engineering are very close. just Google Power-horse 2000, and check the specs. I am very happy with mine.

Re: Tailgating generator?

Oct 14, 2015, 9:28 AM

I have been using the ryobi 2200 from Home Depot for the last 5years and have never had a complaint. It's about 500.00 and is about as quiet as the honda.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tailgating generator?

Oct 14, 2015, 9:28 AM

I purchased a Ryobi 2200 inverter generator at Direct Tool Factory Outlet on Woodruff Rd for $350. They have several other brands as well. They were the cheapest I could find.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're not going to get a good, quiet one for $500.

Oct 14, 2015, 9:30 AM

You can find them cheap, but the cheaper they are, the louder they are.

A guy across from me tailgates with what sounds like a lawnmower with a Briggs and Stratton engine. It is very annoying.

I noticed that Costco had a Honda EU2000 knockoff for about $500 less than the real thing. I would have bought it if I hadn't have already chopped off my left arm to buy the Honda.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't skimp on a generator. Spend the money on a Honda.

Oct 14, 2015, 9:30 AM

I see way to many folks having trouble with a cheap generator. You will be happier in the long run.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Deep cycle battery and inverter.

Oct 14, 2015, 12:06 PM

I have run a SRM29 Interstate Deep Cycle battery with a satellite and rope lights and usb chargers for everyones devices for 12 hours and had over 50% capacity left.
Most TV's draw less than 30Watts and the Directv receiver is like 20 watts.

Oct 14, 2015, 4:37 PM

Ended up going with the Ryobi 2200 as it seems smaller and quiet, but Im going to print out the specs on a couple others (honda, yamaha) and have dad decide if he likes another one better.

I agree with what many of you said, I wouldn't mind spending a couple hundred dollars more if it meant getting a better product. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks again!
