Great teams at FU 1 Time. Will never forget being in Charlotte and watching Furman win the old North-South Basketball Doubleheader. He was a fun guy. RIP Joe.

I took pics for their football and hoops for a while. Covered a couple of those. Kupchack got knocked out cold one night right in front of me. Clyde or Moose did it probably

I went to several of those North South games in Charlotte. Furman was very competitive and actually beat both UNC and NCSU one year.
I believe it may have been Bruce Grimm’s senior year around 77 or 78.

Favorite all time Furman game that Williams coached was the 1974 NCAA tournament game against the Chickens at the Palestra in Philadelphia.

Talked to Coach several times after games at Memorial Auditorium. He was always cordial and nice. Great guy!!

I went to his summer basketball camps a couple of times as a kid
He always had Former players around visiting
You could tell they thought well of him

He coached some tough Furman teams with guys like

Clyde Mayes and Fessor Leonard. They had some real battles with the Tree Rollins Clemson teams as well as the Frank McGuire SCAR teams.

Yep, watched some of those games at the old Gville Mem Aud... about

the same time the Falcons had their training camps at Furman... met Claude Humphrey and some other greats. You could just cruise over there and hang around and watch practices. So different today...

RIP Joe.

smoking cigarettes and writing something nasty on the wall

Joe was stylin' and profilin' in that white suit with those

huge bell bottom pants. We just don't have the characters we use to have coaching college teams. I mean, can you picture "Lefty" if refs let the other team take three steps like they do now?
