Ideas that might make College Football better.

Dec 12, 2012, 12:22 PM

Set a limit to how much college coaches can be paid. (a million) This would stop the slippery slope and slightly reduce expectations. Expectations is the elephant in the room. Too much, emotionally determined, expectations have turned CFB into a stress packed monster. We can't enjoy seasons anymore. It's all about complaining and being let down. Most people suffer from college football more than they enjoy it. Isn't this screwed up?

Set a limit on the price of all college football tickets. (45 bucks)

Make an unbreakable 4 year minimum coaching contract. Performance or new coaching opportunities are out of the equation for 4 years.

Make a law requiring half of all booster donations to go to academics.

Reduce the ability of coaches to recruit. (set strict recruiting budget limits, half the phone contact, half the visits.) This would encourage more local/regional athletes.

Get rid of the concept of "commitments" and simply have players sign when they want during TWO early signing periods in the first week of both August and October or the (3rd) regular signing period.

Make laws that heavily restrict journalists from harassing anyone under 18 at school or combines (recruits)

Allow fans/coaches to have more influence on potential rule changes to curb the precipitous pussification of football.

Obliterate the bowl system and switch to a 12 team playoff NFL brackets and home field advantage.

Have 10 consolation bowls that are rigidly set by records/rankings/selection committee.

NO MORE CONFERENCES. Every program will survive on it's own and not rely on anyone else. All programs are free to play whoever they want and strength of schedule can't be taken for granted ever again.

So we can have another BCS bowl situation where a clearly non deserving team gets a bid?

Sometimes, the best teams in College football are in the same conferences.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which is why I say get rid of conferences all together.

Dec 12, 2012, 12:33 PM

They are a problem. Let each program stand on its own merits.

Conference champs

Dec 12, 2012, 12:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Playoff - 1 team from each conference ]

Using conference champs is the only way to give every team a path to the title regardless of public opinion. The point, IMO, shouldn't be to make sure the teams we think are best get to the playoff, but rather that there is a clear, non-opinion based path for all teams in Div1A to get to the title.

If you don't win your conference you aren't the best team and, IMO, don't deserve a title shot over a team who is a conference champ.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But conferences arbitrarily organize teams into unfair

Dec 12, 2012, 12:37 PM

paths to the title.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Teams can move however they want

Dec 12, 2012, 12:40 PM

I say let conference organize however they want. Conference champs go to playoffs. First round games are chosen based on whatever goofy formula you want to use. That incentivizes the teams to play a tougher schedule as it means another home game and home field advantage.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Teams can't do whatever they want. Money dictates what

Dec 12, 2012, 12:43 PM

conferences decide. Clemson is stuck right now. All teams would want to play in the SEC based on the current status it holds. So the SEC gets to choose who to let into its exclusive club, and the criteria it chooses is money.

With no conferences, TV contracts are a free for all. No more political maneuvering and unfair access to success.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson is free to leave the ACC.

Dec 12, 2012, 12:48 PM

And if we did we'd have other DIV1a conference suitors. And if this conferences had a path to the title game (as I believe all DIV1A teams should) then might make sense for us to do so.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are not free to join the SEC, Big 10 or Pac 12. Our ONLY

Dec 12, 2012, 12:49 PM

choice would be to join the Big 12. I don't call that free to move.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are free to pursue entry wherever we wish

Dec 12, 2012, 12:54 PM

(Within, of course, contractual limitations that we agreed to)

And we would find another conference home. And in the scenario we are discussing that conference would have a path to the title.

See nothing unfair about that from our point of view. It could be argues it would be unfair for smaller teams without the market demand, but I agree with other suggestions that there are simply too many Div1A teams for a feasible system to determine a champion on the field.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My point is that the system we currently have does not

Dec 12, 2012, 12:56 PM

present the range of institutional (per school) freedom that the unrealistic and utopian system I have offered up does. :)

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True

Dec 12, 2012, 12:58 PM

I have no problem with conferences as long as there is a set number who all have paths to the playoffs.

Don't see them going away

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They are not going anywhere, but the SEC could potentially

Dec 12, 2012, 1:00 PM

have 4 or 5 schools more worthy of a title shot than any ACC team this year. So conference champs getting auto bids is arbitrary at this point.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not to my way of thinking

Dec 12, 2012, 1:06 PM

On a personal level I agree that no ACC team "deserved" a playoff spot this year, but on a systematic level IMO the system should work to provide a path to the playoffs, despite public opinion and media coverage and regional bias, for every Div1a team. Since you can't play balanced schedules with as many teams as are in Div1a (heck you can't in our current mega conferences). In fact my idea is the same idea behind pitting division champs in conference championship games rather than voting on the two best teams.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But that is like trying to figure out which is the least

Dec 12, 2012, 1:10 PM

terrible way to do something.

I'd rather look at the flaws, and get rid of them... or at least dramatically reduce them. That's why a playoff makes more sense to me, because that way conference champs will likely be included along with other obviously deserving teams. I would prefer a transparent selection committee to make decisions on pre-established criteria.

I just don't like the idea of teams being rewarded or penalized for things outside of their control. We COULD have a system that minimized that much more than we do now.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Conference champs

Dec 12, 2012, 12:42 PM [ in reply to Conference champs ]

The problem with that process is that there would be instances where a weaker conference champ would get a bid over a stronger team.

If GT would have found some way to win over FSU this year, do you think GT should have gone to a championship playoff over FSU or Clemson?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes

Dec 12, 2012, 12:44 PM

Although to be fair I'd think something may need to be in place in the ACC which would preclude a team from playing the championship game if try finish third or worse in their division and have a worse record than the other division champ (say, 2 games worse).

But that's beside the point. The point, again IMO, should be that there is a path for every team to overcome perception and prove it on the field, and I see winning your conference as the most direct route to that.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yes

Dec 12, 2012, 1:00 PM

I am just not a fan of ONLY conference champs go. Right now there are 5 BCS conferences (the Big East is on the way out). Take the top 2 teams from each conference and you have a 10 team playoff. That way, if you do have 2 very strong teams in one conference one doesn't get shut out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm ok with more getting in

Dec 12, 2012, 1:08 PM

But I think any system which takes two from one conference and none from another leaves itself open to the folly of bias

It still feels like "your team" much moreso than elite college football.

Sort of like how Clemson baseball has a more pleasant feel than football because you don't have as many horsesh*t expectations fans hovering around.

As a GSU fan/alum, I am disappointed when we lose, but I am never outraged. I ENJOY football seasons. As a Clemson fan/alum, I feel like I am being insulted by the administration every time we don't convert a 1st down. It's really bad.

Not that many other schools put sports revenue, if they're lucky enough to have any, towards academics, but those schools are getting obscene amounts of money. It is fair in some sense since those schools aren't as interested in football, but I just think corporations can champion certain schools more than others. Money distorts everything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with this. Div I only needs about 65 teams

Dec 12, 2012, 12:48 PM [ in reply to Promotion and Relegation ]

Div II should have 80 teams. so on and so on. The worst 12 drop out, and the best 12 move up. (playoffs)
