Outlaw Music Festival: A Review
Sep 20, 2021, 8:01 AM
|
|
The Adidas Family Band joined Margo Price, Gov't Mule, Sturgill Simpson, and Willie Nelson at the Outlaw Music Festival in Charlotte, last night.
Margo Price - Margo took the stage first and delivered a solid set. I've only listened to her after seeing that she was playing the show. The Adidas family all enjoyed her performance. I wouldn't go see her play solo anywhere unless it was within 10 miles of my house, but she was a solid opener.
Gov't Mule - Gov't Mule took the stage next and put on a SOLID show. I'm trying to recall what they played... for me, the highlights were Going Out West (Tom Waits cover), The Other One (Grateful Dead cover). They also did Mule, Soulshine, Dark was the Night Cold was the Ground (Blind Willie Johnson cover), Gonna Send You Back to Georgia (Timmy Shaw cover), and I'm a Ram. Mule finished, then came back on stage. Warren said, "whelp, I'm being told to keep playing.... so we'll do a few more songs for you". That's when they did Going Out West, Gonna Send You Back to Georgia, and Soulshine.
Sturgill Simpson - I love Sturgill's music. After a looooonnnnggggg break, the show producer came out and said that Sturgill wasn't going to be performing due to "vocal issues". ###. That sucked. So much aggrivation, first of all, this is the second Outlaw Festival (produced by Blackbird Productions) that I've been to, where one of the main acts didn't perform. Last time was when Willie allegedly carped his pantaloons in '19 (I think). Secondly, why did it take them an hour to make the decision that his voice wasn't good enough to play??? And lastly, if 88 year old Willie Nelson can come out there and do a set, then I think Sturgill could suck it up and make it happen. What a d1ckhead.
Willie Nelson - Willie is Willie. Great to see him, but I trust you guys and feel like this is a safe space... Willie is pretty much a novelty at this point. His guitar playing sounds like a 12 year old who just discovered guitar music. His voice is trashed... he's 88 for crying out loud. It really feels like at this point, he is being paraded around like a mascot to pile up some money for his estate. I respect the helllll out of him and had a good time, but it wasn't good. He had a son of his sitting next to him. This dude - good Lord. He goes by Particle Kid. He looked to be about 20 years old, and was therefore probably a testtube baby, or at least a scientific miracle. He had red/pink died hair, and was just all around crappy. Willie and Particle would take turns playing songs. It reminded me of Wedding Crashers - Christopher Walken and his son , Todd. "Death you are my b1tchh lover!" "Yea Todd, you tell that mean old ocean!" One of Particle's song was called "It's all Bullshiiitt". It was like middle school angsty band talent show quality. Some folks even boo'd. Anyway, Willie did his thing, I hope he retires soon.
In conclusion, I won't likely be going to another of these Outlaw Festivals. Margo was okay, Mule kills it, Sturgill pussed out, and Willie needs to hang up his ol' guitar, Trigger. Also - his son totally blows. I would have played 4X as much just to see Gov't Mule play. Kids had fun, I had fun, wife had fun. All in all, it was a good family outing.

from their ENTIRE SET, then went back and said they came back on stage, I thought to myself, "Self, that's a little confusing. I hope nobody thinks that these three songs were played twice." Then I reminded myself, "come on Self, these guys are smart. Plus who really cares." At that point, I had put more thought into it than was reasonable, so I moved on.
NO, they didn't play Soulshine twice.

Saw Particle Kid at Willie's 4th of July picnic.

The talent gene skipped a kid, for sure. He's maybe good enough to play a brewery in Rock Hill on a Tuesday night but has no business performing with professionals for a paying audience. Saw him in a streaming Nelson family show during the quarantine and they had him playing some minor percussion the whole time he was on stage.

1000X better than last night.
Picture the same thing, but he now has pink hair and is sitting down the whole time. Willie occasionally bangs on his guitar, which sounds like a 3 year old banging on a fisher price guitar, plus Warren Haynes just got done blowing the roof of the place minutes earlier before the sun even went down.

On Willie - reminds me of the time I took my Mom to see her
Sep 20, 2021, 9:23 AM

|
all-time favorite - Bob Hope.
He was doing a show and was WAY past his prime.
He came out with Delores and some dude that I think was directing a small band that was on stage with him . . . can't remember the exact deets on why this guy was on stage.
Bob mugs for the cameras & the LONG standing O . . . . Delores (rhymes with a . . . nevermind)leaves the stage - Bob does his trademark "turned at an angle" and delivers a great joke, short story.
The crowd roars.
He tells another one - but it got a little jumbled, but it was still good.
Then the dude on stage comes up to him and whispers in his ear, Bob laughs, the whole crowd laughs loudly at this apparent improvisation - and Bob delivers another great one.
Dude comes up to Bob again, right as the crowd was quieting - same thing - although the crowd didn't laugh so much this time - Bob jokes.
Dude comes up, whispers, Bob laughs, delivers the joke.
This goes on for 45 minutes - my Mom was in tears for her longtime "friend" - probably a little scared, too - to see the ravages of aging right in front of her.
Hard to tell old people how to live out their days - my Mom has been dead for 5 years or so - we nearly had to tie her down towards the end to keep her from going out in the summertime to "garden" - piddle around her flower beds and end up keeling over dead from dehydration. It is sad to see & even harder to try & enforce restrictions.

Also, reminds me of Glen Campbell. I think a lot of people thought the family was shilling Glen out for a last payday after the Alzheimer's was on full display, but I have a feeing playing in front of crowd was where Glen felt most at home and a large part of the last tour that was chronicled in a documentary might have actually been what was best for him and not just a money grab for the family. I'm sure it was painful for fans to see, but I can definitely see how Glen probably pushed to go out and play.

Here's the thing about Willie's children:

One, he has many and some are older than most of us.
Two, for YEARS you never heard from any of them and now at least three are gigging with him. Lucas Nelson is not terrible - at least he is a semi-skilled musician. But the rest? WITAF?
As others have noted, sad to see.
But APM has seen Willie more times than any other musician and I have my memories. And they are good.

the only free thing semi-interesting on Southwest's streaming options several months ago.
My overall impression was that the dudes playing with him wouldn't let him tune their guitars if Willie wasn't his Dad. Seemed like they were counting on the name recognition (and I'm sure Dad footing some costs) to make pairing with him worth it.

It might not be your thing, but the guy is a respected player, singer, songwriter, and performer. Go back and watch his Austin City Limits set. I streamed the filming during the quarantine and it was masterful. On top of that, ACL doesn't air any hack musicians or play on nepotism...that's a tribute to his talent in and of itself. Also, Lukas didn't grow up being mentored by Willie musically, he has many times publicly attributed that to Neil Young. I don't think Willie was around al that much, and Lukas became Lukas more or less on his own. He spends a lot of time in the Willie family circle these days, but that's not where he earned his chops.

He's in good shape financially from all reports, but near what he might have if there hadn't been a run-in with the IRS years ago. The man loves playing live. Those who do usually do end up dying on or close to being on the stage. That, coupled with the fact that you don't make money on selling records anymore pretty much explain why he's not willing to retire.
