On the ND/Silent Treatment topic...how did you learn?

Oct 7, 2014, 11:00 AM

If you were there, how did you learn about the fact that Clemson was giving the BB Heads the silent treatment?

Did people come up to your tailgate? Were there flyers handed out about when to start cheering?

Did you hear something on WSBF, or read it in the Tiger?

I was on campus, of course, and I think the biggest impetus came at the pep rally the night before. But if you weren't on campus, or your parents weren't, how did they learn about it.

Just looking for ideas if folks are serious about this weekend. I can say without the university's support (ala R.C. Edwards in '77) it would be a very tough thing to pull off.

the cheerleaders walked around the stadium holding up signs before the game and demonstrating clapping not hitting your hands together. it was perfect. no one mentioned anything before hand.

I was 14 years old and as I recall....

the cheerleaders walked around the tailgating lots before the game telling everyone. There were also people (possibly Central Spirit) at the gates as you entered the stadium.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I don't remember specifically where I leaned of

the Silent Treatment by the fans against Maryland(I believe, not 100% sure)--at least the first time.

It was so cool hearing the applause emanating from the few opposing fans and parents who made the trip....people stood up, held a Tiger in front of their face to completely ignore...and then, when the PA system announcer said "andnow for YOUR Clemson Tigers"--Littlejohn just erupted into a withering tsunami of noise when the remaining ten thousand fans made their presence felt. There are those who claimed the exposed rafters looked to be swaying.

It would be so cool to hear that same tactic used at a football game--just to make a point. But its a lot more people and a lot more traditions...but just at that point where the cannon fires and the boys make that run, to conceive of the noise emanating from a once mostly silent DV.....

It was indeed cool ...

Oct 7, 2014, 11:29 AM

... in the pressbox, some of the visiting writers were trying to open the windows (and it was a brisk day) because they could see the fans "clapping" and the band "playing" but there was no noise.

Then the cannon went off ... the closest thing you might find to that noise level was on the third down play vs. Miami, when Charles Bennet and Gaines Adams got the QB. Only difference was it went on for much of the game.

Not to be negative, but I see the idea of a silent treatment

Oct 7, 2014, 11:49 AM

for Louisville and Petrino to be

a little like having DeShaun Watson lining up at WR.

I prefer our program to be known for bludgeoning people with our strength rather than getting cutesy wuth them. That sounds too much like what the Dukies do...

I understand the sentiment, but disagree entirely

Oct 7, 2014, 11:59 AM

The 77 Silent Treatment wasn't denying Clemson of that cudgel. By staying silent, it gave the BB Heads no real way to gauge the molten torrent of boiling hell cascading down when the cannon went off.

They were clearly rattled.

It took the 2-by-4 of crowd noise and added a few rusty nails to the end for effect.

Agree. It went from stone silence, band faking playing, faking applause, to ear splitting noise in one second. Kind of like an unexpected touchdown when everyone is sitting on their hands.

Well....

It became obvious when the band was marching and "playing", but no sound coming out.

That was a fun, fun day. Had we held onto the lead and won that day, it would probably be a top five game for me. (Went to first game in 1974)
