Men's tennis wrap up

Jun 8, 2013, 1:10 PM

The team finishes #21 in the last rankings of the year. The highest the team has finished since they finished 19 in 1997.

final rankings in the link. Virginia won the national title.

Yannick Maden finished at #31 in the nation in singles and Huntter Harrington finished at #96.

The doubles team of Yannick and Dom Maden finished #8 in the nation and they were named All-Americans

How does next years team look?

WE TOO DEEP

much different

Jun 8, 2013, 1:32 PM

losing:
31 Yannick Maden (#1 player for the last 3 years, graduation)
Zac Rigsby (solid bottom line-up player, graduation)
Gerardo Meza (played #3 this year, eligibility used up)
Ayrton Wibowo (great doubles player, eligibility used up)
Martin Blaho (bench player only played in one match all year, transfer to Pacific)

returning:
96 Hunter Harrington (blossomed into a solid #2 and ended the year ranked)
Dom Maden (great doubles player, played #4 in singles)
Austin Ansari (very solid #6 this year, started the season 15-0)

coming in confirmed:
Zachary Kennedy (5 star prospect from Georgia. Big guy. The best of the recruiting class and the one with the most potential.)
Brent Lett (5 star from Lugoff,SC. Just behind Kennedy.)
Christian Harris (4 star from Hilton Head. Will probably be a bench player)
Daniel Strawn (4 star from Macon,GA. Big tall lefty, will probably be bench next year but will help players warmup with a lefty something the team hasn't had in a while)
Luke Johnson (transfer from Florida. From England. He was a solid 5-6 player for Florida this year and clinched a few important wins for the Gators during the year)

speculation coming in:
Pedro Dumont (transfer from Miss State. From Brazil. Was a good #6 for the Bulldogs and won vs some good players. Has good potential to get better and goes to Brazil to train.)
Robert Dudley (recruit from Ireland)
Unnamed Taiwanese player
Unnamed International

Lett's coming to Clemson?
I played against him in high school when he was in 7th grade. Was probably 5'0 85 LBS. He lead Spring Valley to at least 1 state title. Kid is remarkably consistent, born to play tennis.

yes he is

he will probably not be top 6 too often in year one. I have to see how he plays to fully determine.

And in some good ways

TIP - I know you follow the tennis program closely and I for one am DELIGHTED and THRILLED that we have a good program again using mostly American players. I have been very frustrated with US colleges and the influx of foreign players taking over college tennis. This is a non-revenue sport and find it extremely disappointing that we have gone in this direction. It has and continues to significantly hurt youth tennis. People would be amazed to know how many (even low-level) Div 1, Div 2 & Div 3 teams are using mostly to all foreign players.

Nancy Harris is the typical US College Coach - barely works to find US players and focuses almost solely on foreign kids.

What say you?

its the only way some schools can compete though.

Jun 8, 2013, 3:06 PM

the very top American guys will most always choose UCLA,Southern Cal,Stanford,Virginia,Georgia, etc. The big powers.

A few years ago ETSU had a top 40 team with exclusively south American players. No good american player would consider ETSU so they have to try an find hidden international gems. The top guys from Chile are more likely to compete with the best of American that are the bottom drawer American players.
