Mac Brown illegal recruiting admission. Am I wrong?

Dec 6, 2022, 7:02 AM

Including NIL in recruiting is not permitted under the current rules, right? So why would Mac Brown admit to it like it’s allowed? He at least says they don’t tamper in advance but then says they talk NIL during recruiting. The NCAA has no authority and is a joke.

Per an article here on TNET leading up to the ACC championship game Mac said, “ If you want to leave, we'll help you with what you do. But then we've got to start looking at the transfer portal. Most people get a head start, we don't; we go by the rules. So when someone gets in the portal, then you call them, and they've got an agent, so then you talk to their agent about coming and then you've got to get a transcript and find out if they can get in, and then you've got to work with NIL and the collectives as they start working with recruiting. And you try to figure out your team could look very, very different in January when they come back than it does for the bowl game this year.”

He’s apart of the old guard

He’s 71

The kind of coach that doesn’t like all the new stuff and will call out practices (but has enough respect not to call out names). Brown is right in this case, it’s against the rules to contact someone who is not in the transfer portal asking them in the transfer portal.

Well, to his credit he’s playing by the rules. Unfortunately, most aren’t which puts those that are ..behind the trend.

I think there’s been a relaxation in the relationship between a school and NIL collectives. Notice Neff promoting their existence these days? Brown probably meant that they make the player’s agent aware of the collective and maybe vice-versa. What Brown didn’t say was that they contact players and encourage them to enter the portal or ask the NIL collective to do that for the school. That’s where the NCAA has emphasized is a violation of rules. Of course it’s basically unenforceable and so rampant that the NCAA has no resources to do anything about it.

I’ve seen two new coach press conferences where they stand in front of a screen that has an alternating pattern of the teams logo with the NIL collective name. So you can promote it without necessarily saying it? Pretty sure all teams can “steer” the players towards their NIL collective.

They can tell recruits about NIL

Dec 6, 2022, 7:54 AM

and opportunities. They can tell them how much some of the players make from it. What they can’t do is make a specific offer to a recruit as a condition of him signing. They can even say there’s a good chance a particular recruit could make millions, but can’t directly offer it at the same time.

Think about it, there are probably 10 top 20

Dec 6, 2022, 7:52 AM

teams that have boosters/collectives trying to poach his QB. Maybe could sign a mil NIL and play at Bama, LSU, UGA, TN, or take your pick next year. Fakkin Wild West again.

Is the NIL collective internal to the school or 3rd party? If 3rd party do schools have NIL teams together who go out and look for deals / sponsors?

Collectives are independent of the school. All compensation is between the player and the collective. IPTAY can’t be a collective because it’s structured with a relationship to Clemson (ie capital projects and scholarship funding).

Regarding your second question, I’m not certain. Clemson has the NIL resources investment, but the intent is to provide a way for the students to go find NIL opportunities. I’m not clear if Clemson is paying staff to support it or do any outreach on behalf of Clemson students.

There are advertisements in Death Valley on the video board for fans to donate money to the collective so that we can recruit good players.
