List of CFB Nat'l Champs, 1981-2018
Mar 20, 2019, 3:05 PM
|
|
Prior to the 1980's college football championships were for Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, USC, Notre Dame or one of the Big Ten teams. However, over the last 4 decades there has been a shift South and East - and a little conference located on the Atlantic coast has been transformed in the process. [And before anyone points it out - I know Miami wasn't in the ACC when they actually won those national championships, but they are now, so I'm including them].
'81 to '90 - ACC rising. 1981 CLEMSON TIGERS 1982 Penn State Nittany Lions 1983 MIAMI HURRICANES 1984 BYU Cougars 1985 Oklahoma Sooners 1986 Penn State Nittany Lions 1987 MIAMI HURRICANES 1988 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 1989 MIAMI HURRICANES 1990 (shared, unjustly) GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS; Colorado Buffaloes
'91 to 2001 - Sunshine State dominates. 1991 (shared, legitimately) MIAMI HURRICANES; Washington Huskies 1992 Alabama Crimson Tide 1993 FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES 1994 Nebraska Cornhuskers 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers 1996 Florida Gators 1997 (shared) Nebraska Cornhuskers, Michigan Wolverines 1998 Tennessee Volunteers 1999 FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES 2000 Oklahoma Sooners 2001 MIAMI HURRICANES
'02 to '05 - Wild West. 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes 2003 USC Trojans 2003 LSU Tigers 2004 USC Trojans 2005 Texas Longhorns
'06 to '12 - SEC dominates. 2006 Florida Gators 2007 LSU Tigers 2008 Florida Gators 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide 2010 Auburn Tigers 2011 Alabama Crimson Tide 2012 Alabama Crimson Tide
'13 to now - ACC rises again. 2013 FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES 2014 Ohio State Buckeyes 2015 Alabama Crimson Tide 2016 CLEMSON TIGERS 2017 Alabama Crimson Tide 2018 CLEMSON TIGERS
BOTTOM LINE: 4 teams currently in the ACC for football have won a total of 11 national championships since 1981. If you include the ACC's partial member and football scheduling partner, the number rises to 12 titles...

I choose not to include Notre Dame. They were not part of the ACC in 1988 and even if they had they won this year, I still would not include them. Unlike Miami, which you point out is now a member of the ACC, Notre Dame is not a "football" member of the ACC.

Looks like a good place to post ...
No doubt Clemson is on top and it's not a one and done situation. Dabo is a great man and a great coach, anyone that denies that is fooling themselves ... I do that a lot myself.
Additionally, I have said here and not afraid to say this in front of any fellow Dawg fan ... Clemson, with a high degree of probability, has the next Peyton Manning leading their team for at least two more years. He has it all ... except a good haircut.
Second thing is that my Dawgs have not won a National Championship in football in 39 years. Find it a bit interesting that the stats in the beginning of this thread only went back for 38 years ... guess that just a good round number. The segments are also in random numbers, but again assume they are there to make a point.
Over the past 38 season (please forgive me if I am one off here or there ... )
Combined, the ACC and SEC have won 60.5% of the football national championships - impressive. The ACC w/ 28.9% and the SEC w/ 31.6%
Now, lets round off our sample at the past 40 seasons ... not to say that 38 is not the best sample ...
The ACC and SEC have won 62.5% of the football national championships. ACC - 27.5% SEC - 35.0%
None the less, impressive for both conferences.
Sure Georgia has not won one in the last 38 years ... and you are correct, going back 39 really does not make me feel any better than looking at the last 38, but still not going to throw my favorite team to the curb.
Over all Clemson and Georgia have played a total of 64 times.
Clemson winning 18, or 28.1% of the time Georgia has won 10, or 65.6% of the time They tied 4 times, or 6.2% of the time
Over this same 40 year period (reference above) they have played 17 times Winning Percentages: Georgia 10, or 58.8% of the time Clemson 6, or 35.3% w/ one tie.
With all that being said we have not played each other the past four season ... and we know where the odds probably are on what "should" have happened. Not saying Clemson would have won all four, but darn sure would have won 3 of the four ... if not all four. This is all "if's and but's" and can be debated and no one would ever know ...
Now with all that being said ... excluding the last four seasons, which in the long run is a relatively small sample ... Clemson, (fill in the blank) ...
Yes, Clemson has earned the right to brag ... impressive run ... and good for the team and the fans.

This list does not include preseason National Champs or Recruiting National Champs. These areas are where UGa dominates.

If my count was correct, only Bama and Miami have more Championships than the Tigers between 1981 and 2018. The other "blue bloods" are tied with Clemson at 3 NCs or have fewer. Interesting information.
Since the Playoffs started, the Tigers are in the new elite. Now, the teams play and there's no subjective champions or split champions. Well, of course, unless you're UCF.

Awesome work! CitadelDawg84 No doubt 1980 was left off on purpose. This is the Clemson board and it should begin with Clemson, right?
Some of the middle of your post was like: blah! Janet Jackson song! "What Have You Done For Me Lately"!
The numbers are great; but the rings are better! I mean, ARMY has how many National Titles if you want to talk history! Ohio St fans love to boast about their 8 national titles. I tell them just like the ND and Bamer fans: "so what"! Talking about stuff that happened before the average college football fan was alive don't help you win TODAY! Great for your mindset is about all it's worth. Each season you have to prove it all over again. Including Clemson!
For now; we are doing that! Go Tigers!

The ACC suffers mostly from a handful of schools who don't invest enough in it's football. The ACC only trails the SEC as far as players sent to the NFL. So, it's not a lack of talent! Perception is the ACC's biggest enemy. The Tigers need to keep beating the so called best "it just means more" conference champs by 4 TD's to Help change that narrative "slowly but surely"!
Go Tigers!

Don’t disagree with you. The rings are the goals. Georgia has fallen short for a long time.
All I can say is that I like the direction that Georgia is headed.
Over the past four or five years Clemson has performed in a manner that any competitive person would yearn for.
Having been a “fairly” reasonable poster on TigerNet for years I only post like this when the level of rhetoric against the Dawgs hits a level that earns a view from the other side ... in a reasonable manner
I do realize I am a guest and hope to stay welcomed here.

I kid, I kid.
I appreciate the nature of your relationship with the board. But I have lived in Georgia for 30 years of my life and I want nothing more than UGA to lose every game and for Athens to burn to the ground.

Well, my father-in-law is a UGA alum, my best friend is a UGA alum. I won't want them to lose every game like the coots... but nothing could make me happier than UGA being Charlie Brown with the football swiped away at their moment of greatness. Somehow that just fits.
I just love it when all the Georgia fans pull out their cell phone flashlight in Sanford try and find the team in the 4th. It has to be like the 2nd best tradition in college football.

Yeah, if you want to talk All-Time championships then Pitt leads all ACC teams with 9. Of course, their LAST one was in 1976 (Go Tony Dorsett!)
