LaSamuel Davis is a "project" DE, but

Jan 10, 2015, 5:10 PM

Look at his size. Am I the only one who thinks his height and weight are ideal for the Nickel position? Maybe our coaches should work with him at SLB and groom his coverage skills. Would be a beast as a nickel with his size and physicality.

No. He played at 220 lbs at Bamburg this year, he will redshirt and play at 250 as a red shirt freshman. Levon Kirkland came to Clemson at 190 lbs and left at about 260.

Davis needs his hand in the ground. People can say what they want about Vic, but he is also a better player with his hand in the ground.

His frame is very impressive.

No, no, and no. Davis is actually a whole lot like Vic Beasley or a Ricky Sapp, physically. He's long, lean, has that absolutely explosive first step. He's an edge rusher all the way.

He's also a tremendous character and has a tremendous work ethic, from what I'm hearing. He'll redshirt...and immediately work to build muscle and size. He's one of those guys you won't hear anything much about his first couple years...and then by the time he's a redshirt sophomore, he could well have worked his way onto the 2-deep and you'll see him making plays, and by the time he's a junior, he could well be starting and turning heads. He's a project...but one with a very high ceiling. He could be one of the more underrated guys in the class, actually.

But Beasley and Sapp are both guys that transitioned

To OLB in the NFL. It's just a thought, because we are about to be quite talented at DE, and I'd like to see us utilize Davis the best we can.

Beasley hasn't transitioned quite yet besides there is a world of difference between a 3-4 and a 4-3 OLB. Besides Davis has the frame to carry much more weight than Vic and at some point the kids deserve to be trained at the position that benefits them most (considering their NFL impact) rather than the position that benefits CU the most. Not that I think anyone would really want to see Davis lining up over a slot receiver.

Kirkland actually left Clemson at about 215-220. He didn't get BIG until the Steelers got him.
