So let's say Clemson beats UGa

I'm not entirely confident Clemson will win that game with so many young/ inexperienced skill players and with it being on the road, but let's just assume that it happens. How high could Clemson go in the polls?
Let's take a look at some of the games that are being played the first weekend by teams ahead of Clemson (#16) in the AP poll:
Sure things (including Georgia)
+1- Wisconsin/ LSU- These teams are #14 and #13, respectively, so whichever teams loses would drop behind Clemson while the other team would probably remain ahead.
Possible upsets
- SCU vs. ATM- this is probably the most likely to happen of these games, and I still don't think it's very likely since ATM will be breaking in a new QB on the road and since their defense was so terrible last year.
- FSU vs. Oklahoma St.
- Auburn vs. Arkansas (Auburn will be without Nick Marshall and Carl Lawson)
Long Shots
- UCLA at UVa- UCLA's offense will be scary good, so UVa will have to find a way to score a bunch of points if it wants to compete.
- Alabama vs. WVU- WVU wasn't very good last year, so they'll have to be greatly improved to even get close to competing with Bama.
Clemson would probably also pass Stanford and USC, which are both playing scrubs. A resounding win over UGa coupled with Baylor struggling against SMU (which could happen, as SMU has been pretty good the last few years), might also mean Clemson passing Baylor.
Realistically, I don't see any of the upsets happening, so Clemson probably only gains 4 spots with a win, moving from #16 to #12. If I'm being really optimistic, I could see Clemson passing 7 teams (Georgia, Wisky/ LSU, USC, Stanford, Baylor, SCU, Auburn) and moving up to #9. Best case scenario, we pass all 9 of the teams mentioned and move up to #7.
Thoughts?

I don't see any way we move into the top-10

unless we win by 20 or something like that. I think then we'd soar up the polls because of the "oh, we might have underrated them" aspect. With that said, we gotta win the game first, and I'd be thrilled with a 1 point win.

Plus it would add to the media hype for the FSU game.***

It will depends on how the majority of the voters approach

their ballots this early in the season. Do they
A) Look at preseason poll as purely a guess and re-evaluate every team after Week 1?
B) Just look at where teams are ranked and only move down if they lose?
My humble opinion is that nationally, people are high on our D but skeptical of the O. If we beat UGA, especially if we do it with a strong offensive performance and not just because of the D, then I would expect a lot of pundits/voters to say, OK, this team is pretty good and vote accordingly.

I'm taking the opposite approach. If we hold UGA to 10 points and take away their running game (a huge task with Gurly being the best rb in the country IMO), and Cole shows he can adequately run our offense in a hostile environment then we would jump higher than if we won a game 38-35.
My reasoning is the pollsters probably aren't sold on us as a defensive powerhouse and this would cement their belief. I also think that most people expect us to still be able to put up points while having Chad run the offense. Another reason is looking at the SEC. Seems pollsters like to rank defensive teams above offensive teams.

That's why I said "not just" because of the D. I think with a solid performance by the D, and the O playing well also, that is how we could make a big jump. And yes, that would likely mean a 10-14 point win.

Gotcha. I would be extremely excited if we started this season with a 24-10 win

I could still see Winston struggling a bit on the big stage in an NFL stadium with all the hype, etc.

what evidence do you have for Winston struggling in
Aug 18, 2014, 10:56 AM

any environment. As posted below the kid has seen it all environment wise and has responded every time. The kid isnt phased by hype, etc... If he struggles, it will have nothing to do with the environment.

him having a big head or lacking focus is a lot different than him being rattled by the big stage.

but playing in Cowboy Stadium might be brighter lights to him than DV last year, especially with all the expectations on him this season.
You might be 100% correct though. He might be stellar in that game and all season.

OSU will be breaking in a new QB, but they've got some talent. OSU will be helped by playing in Dallas, but it won't be quite as comfortable for a new signal caller as playing in Stillwater might've been. Plus, we've all seen that hostile environments don't seem to have much effect on Winston.

true on Winston getting rattled, not likely

he faced a hostile DV and threw a strike on like the second play. Also, hes played in the pressure environment of national championship. Itll be interesting to see who replaces the go to monster of Benjamin

had an offseason that was newsworthy for reasons other than football and he's had time to stare at that Heisman. It's not entirely unlikely that some complacency takes hold this season.

external factors, that would be more of focus issue. Im not a fan of his by any means due to his off field issues, but on the field he is money. Until proven wrong, I wont doubt him as I and many did last year.

field the kid is legit. I doubted him time and time again last yr like most and all he did was throw it back at us on the field. You may be right that all of this praise and winning the title an off field issues may have an effect and wouldnt be the first time but im now holding my breath. Of course I would love nothing more than for it to happen.

If we get to #15 I would be surprised. It just doesn't work like that. UGA would have to beat USUC at willie brice for our win over UGA to actually be valid. Otherwise, UGA would be considered the black sheep of the SEC and discarded as a contender for anything this year.
That said - #15 would be fine with me. We have to beat FSU or play them close at Doak for CLEMSON to be noticed.

Especially since Clemson's season may be made against UGa. I have almost no confidence in beating FSU at Tally, so for us to have any chance at being in the playoff, we need to beat UGa so that we're still hanging around the top 10 with a loss to FSU. Then we need teams like UofL, UNC, SCU, GT, and NCSt. to have decent seasons to boost our SOS.

Auburn vs. Arkansas could be interesting, but I don't think Marshall misses the whole game if it is close.

Is that if we take care of business, it will all work itself out. Doesn't matter if we're 11-0 and then lose to SC though, we still won't make the playoff. That's the OOC that matters.
