I watched Sankey’s press conferences this morning

Jul 18, 2022, 4:12 PM

Here’s my takeaway…

1. This week is not about expansion, nothing happening this week so let’s focus on SEC.

2. Conversations are being held with potential targets.

3. He didn’t deny nor confirm SEC will expand, but he certainly didn’t close that door either.

4. I believe his comment about schools having GORs, and the SEC not getting in the middle of those issues, was a direct nod to Clemson, FSU, or other ACC schools. Basically saying find a way out of your GOR and then call us.

5. Like in previous expansions, he doesn’t want the SEC to be viewed as “raiding” other conferences and his statements were carefully and skillfully worded to reflect that position. Possibly for legal cover? They may expand, but the schools must initiate.

6. I’m more convinced than ever that if Clemson can extract itself from the GOR, or negotiate a settlement, they will be in an expanded SEC sooner than later.

Good assessment. Agree with #4. I don't think I've heard GOR being a concern with anyone else but the ACC. Stupid acc.

What will be interesting is what's said or not said at acc media days.

Regardless of what our future may hold, if we, and the ACC, are not pro-active in discussions on tearing up our current football model, including divisions, schedules, and payouts, and establishing media values for various formats, right now, then we are hand-delivering a Big Two conference format and letting them, solely, dictate terms for expansion, post-season, and new entry payouts.

If, as I suspect, there is significant value in an enhanced football-centric division among current ACC schools, plus one or two higher level contributors in that area, then it is incumbent upon us to explore and confirm that, for two huge reasons.

1. The broadcast arms need some competition to trot out to the SEC and B1G to help restrain the amount of their ask (i.e. don't let them run off with more than a fair share thinking everything else is dead in the water), and

2. The SEC and B1G need to see some competition for media dollars in the football space to both check their own ambitions and illustrate the real value of potential incomings.

The more that the media, and SEC and B1G, believe there are only two real players going forward, our prospects will suffer. If there is significant value for another way forward, the sooner that is out in the open the better. With both SEC and B1G rights packages coming up for renewal within the next year, it's imperative that we act without delay here. A similar situation exists with what's left of the Big XII and Pac - together they have a very decent top end, but not for long.

Extremely well laid out. I'm concerned we(acc comm) isn't on par with what you're saying. I could be wrong but it seems like we think bball can help carry the day. Don't know.

Bottom line, it's ashamed we didn't become proactive before Texas/Oklahoma move. Water under ### now. Totally agree, time is now and we need to go big. We're ok for a couple few years, many will think and say we survived. It's what happens 3-5 years when we can't keep up.

What do you suggest on the how?

Start by Clemson aligning with FSU, Miami, UNC, NC State, VA Tech, Louisville, and Pitt - 8 programs that could together control the fate of the ACC and the GOR, and who also could serve as a very marketable college football division of its own.

Have this ACC 8 let it be known to the league and potential media partners that they are interested in working closer together and scheduling closer together in football, forming its own division there. All other sports could go either way. The remaining six would be encouraged to ride along, or do the same, and add two affiliates on for scheduling (USF and Memphis style). These new programs could be football only or across the board in all sports. The goal would be to keep the ACC intact, but it has to change on the football end.

Get feedback from ESPN/Fox/NBC/CBS/Amazon/Apple/Netflix/Turner/TimeWarner on what a financial package could look like for the ACC 8 in football, plus some cross-scheduling with the other division, especially in how it compares with today's split arrangement and our base product to date. Yearly, we have 12 games total between our top programs all season - that's it. This more than doubles that number, with rival crossovers still on the docket.

Adding anyone else, or Notre Dame, or what have you, and the other half of the league and Olympic sports, could all be a part of media discussions, but to start we should best assess what we have in hand, how the ACC 8 could be great in football, and go from there.

I think you’re very close there. Need 8+ existing ACC schools to let it be known we are ready to move and destroy the GOR. No conference no GOR. Add Ok St, TCU Baylor maybe Houston and ugh WVU and maybe you have a trans American conference that gets a lot of Texas and Florida, the fastest growing states, and it gets attention. Add ND and that seals it.

Texas schools and out West could do something similar, though they don't have a single league strength that we're operating from to make it happen. There are 5 Pac teams (Oregon, Washington, Stanford, AZ State, Utah) and 5 Big XII teams (Baylor, OK State, TCU, Iowa State, BYU) that could serve up a solid 10-team Western version up top, with the rest a notch down waiting for an opening, but playing back and forth some still. Texas' alpha schools have flown the coop, so it's best to just offer kids there an out of that whole landscape if they're looking for it, which we do.

I will definitely harp back to West Va though being a part of our upper mix. They're an Appalachian school, our side, the state school public and open, and don't belong out west. Plus you know they're broke as hell and all that extra team travel for Olympic sports has got to be a huge drag on things. Just do the deed already. Country roads.

Lastly, Notre Dame can suck it. Make their 5-game ACC schedule skew up top and take on the big dogs more regularly. We get bigger ratings for our media partner and we get more eyeballs on the Irish's broadcasts. Everybody wins.

Go Tigers.

I agree and would add......

Jul 18, 2022, 6:12 PM

Even if Sankey came out and was very negative about future expansion...I would see it as playing it cool.....because....at the end of the day...it comes down to this: IF the SEC and B1G want to control the playoff, they MUST get bigger than 16. NO ONE is going to recognize the legitimacy of a playoff with schools like CLEM, FSU, MIA, ND, WASH, ORE not participating. ND jumping to the B1G would be helpful, but if it stays independent, it will only slow, for a while IMO, the evolution to two super conferences and then perhaps to one. Dabo and Nick have already told y'all where this is eventually going...... Anyone think those two dudes are wrong or aren't privy to a bit of inside info?????

I would also add the animosity towards the ACC...which is already there coming from CLEM, FSU, MIA, etc....will only grow as time goes on. A settlement will eventually get done either through a competitive clause, straight out leaving with other schools, etc.... This isn't going to 2036.

So I guess we're envisioning an NFL model ?

Jul 18, 2022, 9:46 PM

As in two big conferences over all major college football, with a ~ 3 divisions in each conference, and teams play across conferences for standings and playoff births?
