yall help me out on this college tuition thing

Oct 19, 2016, 9:53 PM

if your household makes less than $125k, you shouldn't pay for tuition, but if you make more you should have to pay?

is it me or does that completely screw the middle class again, like obamacare did while "helping" the middle class?

but i've been wrong plenty

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it just sounded like $125k

Oct 19, 2016, 10:03 PM

$250k seems more doable which still falls to H8ns question of who pays.

two UDP tnet salaries of $80k put you over the threshold it sounded like. Which makes me want to keep Mrs Fluff at home to collect the gov't check rather than work for the paycheck.

I think it's a terrible idea, but depending on where you

Oct 19, 2016, 10:43 PM

live, but it could be quite a stretch to consider 125K middle class. It would be far above middle class in SC.

125K a year in 2016 household income with 3 kids, 401k's, insurance and cost of living isn't even close to above the middle class.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It puts you in the top 16% of household income nationwide.

Oct 19, 2016, 10:54 PM

It may not feel like you're doing that well, and after taxes and such whack it down, I know, but the fact is you are making more than double the median and doing better INCOME-WISE than the vast majority of Americans.

Re: It puts you in the top 16% of household income nationwide.

Oct 19, 2016, 11:25 PM

Middle class isnt what it used to be. Many family's in the modern middle class are partially subsidized by the government. Some of it is because the cost of living and expenses has outpaced the ability for a single income household to be viable. So, are they really middle class?

It pays well to be really rich or really good at working the system. The middle has very little in loopholes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course, it depends on how you define "middle class",

Oct 20, 2016, 12:14 AM

but those in the top 16% simply are not in the middle - not by any definition. If you want to make that stretch, then I can only say there is such a huge disparity between the top of the middle and the middle of the middle such as to render the term meaninigless. I know folks who make quite a bit more than that, and because they have jobs and pay taxes and have families and a dog and a cat and drive a minivan, they fancy themselves as middle class. Yet, they enjoy many advantages, including a lifestyle and degree of finacial security that families that are truly in the middle class can only imagine. It's largely a matter of misperception. Most of these folks are very smart and to their credit at some point have worked hard and taken advantage of the opportunities they've had. That's great and I don't begrudge them of their success at all, but they often have no idea how many people who are truly in the middle struggle. The "struggle" for folks in the top 16% is very different from the struggle for those in the 50th percentile, even when subsidies and tax breaks are factored in.
