I say we just tell them all to go to #### and go Independent

May 23, 2012, 4:46 PM

It's probably more en vogue now than ever. We can help cover our ACC exit fee by keeping four of their teams on our schedule each year and helping fill their stands when we play our away games there. Schedule Ga. Tech, FSU or Va. Tech plus a BC and Pitt or something. We would definitely get an annual game with an SEC school on top of USuC, plus WVU and another competitive FBS OOC school, a couple of easies like we do now for home fodder, plus BYU and Notre Dame. That's 7 home games and 5 away annually, with solid competition and an opportunity to spread the Clemson name far and wide.

Partner with Notre Dame in choosing a basketball league - the Big East would be attractive, and go the Conference USA route or something in Olympic sports.

We would get full media exposure for our away games, considering the level of competition and conference affiliations we'd be playing, and go the NBC / NBC Comcast route for home games. The other sports are a part of the partner leagues. Maybe we have to do a Home/Away with the basketball league school to make it even, though we'd be doing that with Notre Dame already.

Independence. In this day and age, it may work. The playoffs are not going to be conference champions only. The SEC and Big XII established that when they came up with their new game. It will be open to the best 4 teams regardless. Any team that takes care of business during the season is going to get a shot.

We'd miss out on the conference championship game, and thus forego an opportunity to lose, but also not helping climb with a win if it's coming down to the wire. Either way it's a wash.

This isn't 1971. It's 2012 and Al Gore's invented the internet now. It's a different age.

Since you're already in Cootlumbia, go over to Bull Street

up for discussion again. If an opportunity we just can't refuse comes along during this time to join a league in all sports, then take it. If not, we'll make plenty of revenue in TV rights on our own plus the revenue from the basketball portion. Clemson football delivers a lot of eyeballs. And we're a good team that travels well that has one of if not the best home game environment in the land. We look GREAT on television.

I can't see where this would hurt recruiting - we'd be playing strong teams spread among different leagues. We're the perfect candidate for a Notre Dame of the South.

So you'd be willing to just give up millions of dollars of guaranteed conference money and bowl tie ins? How in the world is that a plus?

NBC / NBC Comcast would guarantee a 5-year contract. They'd

get their hand in broadcasting other league teams, at least five majors a year, from the incredible confines of Death Valley, SC. That would give that network, which has been shut out by ESPN and Fox, and opportunity to broadcast an SEC team per year, two ACC teams per year, plus two Big XII/B1G/Pac12 teams as well.

If we were a top 10 team we would play as an at-large in any one of the top NYD bowls without a doubt. The folks that run those games know the orange power of the $2 bills. They'd love to have us. Many of the rest have plenty of options to go outside of conference under certain circumstances.

Actually... if Clemson did the math...

May 23, 2012, 5:19 PM [ in reply to Re: I say we just tell them all to go to #### and go Independent ]

we had 28,000,000 million viewer last year for football. At $.75/viewer, that would be a contract worth $21,000,000 annually, not including basketball. Clemson is one of the few ACC schools that gets less than it actually brings in.

of an outsider like NBC Comcast gaining viewership from the other conference geographics and fans by having their teams on their network.

This is T-net and there's lots of people ready to laugh this off, but the numbers say we could easily afford to go this route, compared to where we are right now especially, and have greater control over our own destiny from there.

coverage wasn't as available for independents for a lot of that stretch. Now anybody anywhere can watch most college football games in high def on their phones. Clemson could easily support itself today simply with the size and power of its fanbase tuning in like they do at today's prices.

Also our uniforms are fun and people remember them. There's a cuteness thing that works really well for us. That's why I don't cast too much dispersion on the NY Times study rating us at #10 in terms of fan base size. The paw says it all. People identify with it well and there's a lot of viewers out there watching us. We're strong as dirt. USuC was not. Theirs looks like dried blood and you can't draw the chicken easy. It's hardly a comparison.
