I know they changed the format a few years ago but it

Jun 26, 2012, 9:48 AM

still bothers me that it is two out of three once you get to the finals. Losers bracket team effectively has their earlier loss erased. I know this was created for tv drama in the finals but it is stupid. The preliminary games count but then a loss get erased when you're in the finals. I just don't like it but at least this year it was no problem the way it worked out

So having baseball determined by 1 game even though the entire season is based on 2 out of 3 series makes since?

I would agree with you if all 8 teams were in one giant bracket, but because each team in the finals played two different sets of teams, their record against those teams has nothing to do with their expected record against each other.

But yes, it does make for more exciting and dramatic tv. Plus the announcers get to say their overused story lines at least 2x.

the big problem is that no normal person can go anymore

Jun 26, 2012, 9:54 AM

and stay for the entire thing, as it intrudes on 3 work weeks (a Friday thru Tuesday - 13 days). You would have to take a Thursday, Friday.....a whole week......and then possibly Mon-Wed of the next week to see it from start to finish.

You have to decide....do I go out there for the first few days and have to leave if my team is doing well, or do I take a chance and wait to go out at the end, when my team may already be eliminated?

Go when your team is NOT there. Soak it in for whatever time you have.

A "normal" person can't go anyway.

You only know a few days before if it is worth booking the flight and then the prices go crazy. It is for parents, college students, and people with a lot of money. Turns out people with a lot of money can work remotely during the off game times.

I know what you're saying, but...

The loss to Arkansas and coming out of the loser's bracket had a huge effect on the series. I guess not as much as if the loss had actually counted towards a double elimination, but it loomed very large.

but if you're in the loser's bracket don't you have to....

win more games to make it to the finals?

It's not perfect but IMO it's better than the old system.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes. The team coming out of the loser's bracket had to

Jun 26, 2012, 10:32 AM

play one more game (and win). I think it's entirely reasonable to play 2 out of 3 from that point.

They also used up their pitching to get to the finals while AZ's pitchers got to rest. If you don't think that impacted the outcome of the series, you're fooling yourself.

they were that rested

The old system didn't punish the loser at all

Jun 26, 2012, 10:24 AM

if you made it out of your 4 team bracket it was a 1 game winner take all.

I like it. To win the whole thing you have to win a 4 team double elimination bracket, a best of 3, another 4 team double elimination bracket and then another best of 3.

I agree.....usuck had lost twice in the CWS and yet still

Jun 26, 2012, 10:44 AM

had a shot at winning before last nights loss....While 'Zona was unscathed.

Once you make it through the brackets, it should be a one-game showdown.

I think college baseball is the ONLY post season format

Jun 26, 2012, 11:39 AM

that the NCAA does right. Teams that make it earn the right to be there and are not subject to votes by people who have never seen the team play; you are not eliminated because of one bad night (2 of 3 format and double elimination format); you are rewarded for winning (winners bracket) and have to work harder to prove yourself if you lose (losers bracket); and at the end there is one, indisputable champion that had to win at least 10 games against quality teams.
