Has anyone actually watched Virginia?

What happened to them? They have a good QB and they won games last year. Is Tony just taking his lumps and learning right now or what? I have not watched a game this season but I like their QB and Bronco was building something I thought. Thoughts?
Bonus: Do we take Jeff Scott back after this year?

it looked WAY too much like Clemson 2020. QB and receivers were definitely NOT on same page, and O-line play was turribel. I attributed it to getting used to a new system, but if so, it is taking too long.

My thoughts exactly. Watching parts of several games. Just when you think they were (offense) getting into a groove, the oline as you said, or the receiver would drop the pass, and you can watch it and just predict what the next call was going to be. Real close to what we saw last year. Good luck TE.

Jeff Scott got a contract extension this year because they like his recruiting and want to give him time to develop the team. He's not going anywhere.

Not sure why some of y’all obsess over CJS. He was a great recruiter and a good coach but replaceable. I doubt he gets fired after this season and if he does doubt he comes back to Clemson as an analyst. If you haven’t been paying attention, it would be out of character for Dabo to demote a position coach so he could bring back a guy.

It's because people want problems to have an easy fix. It's more difficult to accept the fact that the team has had young players who had to develop, injuries piled up, other teams have begun to challenge Clemson in recruiting the last couple of years. It's much easier to say, "If we just had Jeff Scott!"

Actually I say "Why can't we raid the NFL for top talent coordinators like Kirby is doing?". Or why can't we pick up some big name college coordinators lol je Bama does.
What Dabo us doing works, but I don't understand the why or how it does.

You seem like an angry person with an axe to grind against Jeff Scott. He was instrumental in bringing us the players who absolutely DOMIMATED the ACC for many years and won two national championships. If we had a chance to get him back I think it very likely that Dabo would do whatever he could to make a place for Jeff Scott at Clemson again.

Did you even read my post? I stated it very doubtful he gets fired this year (they are still high on him in Florida for good reason). I stated he was a great recruiter and a good coach. Not sure how this is grinding an axe or angry. I don’t recall Dabo ever demoting a coach outside of Pearman and doubt CJS would not want to be a staffer when he would surely have better options especially at UVA and OU.
In summary you read something I did not write

And I saw that in a thread about CTE and the current state of affairs at UVA, you chose to demean the folks who know how instrumental Jeff Scott was in building this program and would love to have him back. The guy you called "replaceable". So, who replaced him?
There's no comparison between Danny Pearman and Jeff Scott in regard to the overall impact on the Clemson football program; so why even bring Pearman up?

I apologize as I don’t think I can explain it to you giving your reading comprehension issues but will give it one last shot. Kyle Richardson took his spot as a coordinator and has done a great job. Grisham seems to be finding his groove which is expected in his first coaching job. I would note many fans wanted CJS fired early in his tenure until he recruited Nuk and Sammy do comparing CJS in his 10th year in the program to CTG in his 2nd year is unfair at best. Pearman was the only coach pushed out so in all of Dabo’s tenure so to think CJS would get an on field position is not supported based on history. I appreciate CJS’s contribution to the program and pull for him to be a big winner in Florida. I just don’t see him back at Clemson anytime soon. Hopes this helps!

Your sad attempt at condescension aside...

Do you really think that Kyle Richardson and Tyler Grisham COMBINED have replaced Jeff Scott's presence at Clemson? I have nothing against those guys, but lots of people at Clemson wanted EVERYBODY FIRED until 2011-2012 when we turned the corner with coaches like Morris and Hobby and players like Tajh, Sammy and Nuk. By then it was clear that our patience with Dabo was paying off big time. Jeff Scott was essential, crucial in that success. He may be replaceable but imo he hasn't been truly replaced yet. Time will tell and I hope the new guys can grow into that kind of uber-recruiter role that brings us back to the dominant position we enjoyed just a few years ago. We're close but we ain't there yet.
I also wish Jeff Scott success as a head coach. He's earned his shot and I hope he makes the most of it. But whether it's next season or 2027, you're nuts if you really think that Dabo wouldn't do whatever he had to do to make a place for CJS on his staff given the opportunity.

Jeff Scott wasn't the cornerstone of the program. I'm not saying that to diminish Jeff Scott in any way. I think he is a very good coach and contributed much to Clemson's success.
That said, you are boosting him up way too much. You make it sound like the entire foundation of the program rested on Jeff Scott, as though he was even more important than Dabo, or Venables, or Morris.
As I said earlier, in my opinion, you are trying to find a simple explanation for some of the recent struggles Clemson has had, and make Jeff Scott some magic cure-all.

To start CJS is not being fired so this whole discussion is moot. I know you worked hard to dispute a point I never made but I will clarify. Dabo has not ever demoted an on the field coach to make room for someone so I would not expect him to start now. CJS will have better opportunities than a staff job at Clemson should he ever need a job. Scott did well at Clemson but was not essential. We saw the coots state the same line as you every time a coach or coordinator yet Dabo keeps winning

One other point, there is little value trying to judge a coach based on his first year or two at a program. Especially at a place like UVA which other than a few isolated years has been very average. Dabo was 6-7 in his first full year.

He went 6-7 in his 2nd season after losing Spiller and Ford, losing Ellington to injury for about half the season, and starting a QB with broken ribs all year.

I live in VA and my youngest is now at UVA. We went to the ODU game with some friends (who are avid UVA supporters), they and all their tailgate friends all asked me if Tony was a good hire. I only ever answered with "He is a good man who will place the development of young men first and foremost". They seemed to eat up that answer.
During the game, I definitely saw our old offense out there and did tell them they will get sick of the WR screen!!
Since then they have all bailed on Tony already, half a season in. It doesn't matter that their QB regressed, which happens, nor that their OL is pretty much all new. They were barely 6-6 last year and have had 2 winning seasons in something like the last 15yrs, but they expect a 9+ win season out of the gate.
Their D is terrible, he hired Dez Kitchens (guy who shoved Deshaun) as OC who isnt very good and seemingly was forced to keep staffers just because they are UVA grads. I am not sure he is setup for success there as things stand but the UVA elite will just blame Tony instead of looking in the mirror.
They are a .500 program whose legedary coach went .600 over 19 years. Expectations there are unrealistic, they need to aim for 6-8 wins a year with as many 4-5 wins as 9 wins in order to pass the time until Basketball season.

I have watched them several times. They are not a good team on either side of the ball. Don't really know why but they do a lot of 3 and outs and their defense is very porous.

I knew the QB was supposed to be really good. But, every time I watch them it appears he has zero skill talent around him and a horrible OL.

Virginia's OC from last season, Robert Anae, went to Cuse
Oct 7, 2022, 11:09 AM
|
|
and has revitalized their offense and their QB, Garrett Shrader. Brennan Armstrong and Virginia's offense have gone completely the other direction.
Armstrong 2021 - 405 yds/game, 8.9 YPA, 31 TDs, 10 INTS Armstrong 2022 - 210 yds/game, 5.1 YPA, 4 TDs, 5 INTS
Shrader 2021 - 120 yds/game, 6.2 YPA, 9 TD, 4 INT Shrader 2022 - 245 yds/game, 9.6 YPA, 10 TD, 1 INT
Robert Anae might be pretty good and Brennan Armstrong may wish he had transferred and followed him to Cuse.

UVA has played one really good defense in Illinois though and Cuse probably hasn't faced a really good defense yet.
Also these two teams have already played and, while the score was close, Shrader threw for twice as many yards on 5 fewer attempts. Armstrong is broken this year.

A buddy of mine who went to UVA was all excited when the Hoos hired Tony. He asked me what I thought. I told him that UVA is getting a good man who will bring a pedestrian uninspired offense to Charlottesville. I ran into him the other day and he told me that I was right.

jarheadtiger® I watched them.
The announcers mentioned they had to deal with a good deal of transfers in key areas! I don't think you can judge BV or TE "This Season"!
Give them time to get things established.
Virginia did pretty well in it's games; but it's clear they just don't have enough impact players.

Tony is a great guy but I fear that he is not head coach material. I am not sure he has the fire and enthusiasm to recruit at a high level at UVA. The fact that he is black will help, both in recruiting and in keeping his job during what are sure to be some growing pains.
His best hope is to learn from Dabo, and surround himself with some really good assistants. That was the single biggest factor in Dabo’s success, along with improved facilities. I hope Tony has the support from the administration that Dabo got, which allowed for the assistant coach salaries and facility upgrades needed for us to take the next step.

No offense to T.E., but he is a massive downgrade from Bronco Mendenhall. UVA alums and fans know this. Hopefully, T.E. can improve the team over the upcoming few years, but Scott is even money to be at USF as long as Elliott is at UVA.
