Paul Johnson ACC coach of the year?

Dec 2, 2014, 1:52 PM

I think it should have gone to our own CDS. With what he accomplished this year with a bang up offense? I thought that was pretty doggone good.

It's hard to argue against Paul Johnson....

Dec 2, 2014, 1:55 PM

He was on the verge of getting fired and now his tema is playing for a conference championship.

not sure how you can argue against it, he seemed dead in the water with suspensions and transfers this spring, but this is the best I have seen his offense run and his D is pretty good too.

Yepp he'll get it...thanks to that $hitty field causing injuries, if not for that it wouldn't be a discussion. A healthy DW and he knows how that game would have gone.

GT's a good football team, but they definitely lucked out in

Dec 2, 2014, 2:24 PM

their big wins. Beating Clemson without Deshaun Watson and Georgia without Todd Gurley should come with asterisks. Those two players are the focal points of their team's offense when healthy. Chubb was good this year, but I don't think GT beats either team with their star players playing.

Luck goes both ways. Smelter tore his ACL early in the UGA game, and PJ Davis (leading tackler) had a concussion and missed most of the game. Still dominated much of that game and still won despite some awful calls.

Against Clemson GT literally had only 2 scholarship DT's left on the entire roster due to an absurd amount of attrition and injuries. They shifted a DE to DT for the game and played 2 true freshman at DE for much of the game and still had a lot of success. Say what you want about Stoudt, but he beat some decent teams as a starter. You can't just throw out that game as an impressive win for GT, even though we know it would be different with Watson.

Facts are facts. GT was picked 5th in the Coastal by many and was supposed to be in danger of missing a bowl, and they have won 10 games and the division and are on the brink of the top 10. Paul Johnson is an absolute shoe-in for COY this year, and that's no knock on Swinney at all, who has also done a good job.

Would we have gotten an asterisk for beating FSU

without Winston? I don't remember getting one when we beat them with Tricket

There are definitely pollsters who would have looked at

Dec 2, 2014, 2:41 PM

a win against FSU differently with and without Jameis Winston. It wouldn't have changed the standings, but it would have showed up in the polls.

I was just thinking that with so many hurt players on offense, we had a great year. But there was some great points made about GT, especially the defensive one about only 2 scholarship players.
