Seeing number #83 run down the Hill

gave me a feeling inside that i cannot describe. A lot of active duty folks are former HS athletes....most were not big enough, strong enough or athletic enough to be D-1 athletes....a lot of us sought the team atmosphere of the military once our playing days ended in HS, or for me, two years of college baseball at SCSU that ended with shoulder and elbow surgeries. On top of all of that, #83 was the epitome of a vet -- a #### grunt...a trigger puller who caused death and saw death. I was in the next province over from him when he was in Afghanistan and that was Indian Country all day, every day....my unit, 3d Bn 5th Marines (3/5), had 26 KIA and 181 WIA and #83's unit wasn't far behind us. I don't care that he was in the Army and i'm a Marine.....#83 knows the meaning of "for those who have fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected will never know"...and he also knows "people sleep peacefully in their beds at night because there's rough men who stand ready to do violence on their behalf".....he knows this because he's tasted the cost of fighting for freedom and he's one of those rough men....he's also a CLEMSON TIGER who gets to live his dreams after signing his name to a check that can be payable UP TO YOUR LIFE in combat.....seeing him run down the Hill, OUR HILL, made me cry and i don't give a #### if it makes me soft admitting that or whatever.....#83 deserves everything he gets and somehow i suspect that he'll never take it for granted and nobody will ever out work that kid....but he's not a kid.....he's about 50 years old inside but he's getting to live the dreams of a kid. From this Marine Corps grunt to #83 WR DANIEL RODRIGUEZ, SEMPER FIDELIS BROTHER....you are my brother and you are a CLEMSON TIGER FOR LIFE.
