My biggest concern - Wes Goodwin and the Clemson defense

Do I feel like the offense will get within the 5 yard line again 5 times and get no points? Probably not. I don't think I have ever seen that.
The defense however has shown an inability to swarm tackle, they play with zero effort, the play with awful fundamentals, they look slower today than when they arrived on campus.
Wes Goodwin has done one of the worst jobs coaching this group up. I mean historically bad in terms of collegiate defensive coordinators.
I am not sure he will make it past this season. It is time for a complete overhaul

Replacing the best defensive coordinator ever is tough. But this guy is clearly over his head. Then again, we hired the best offensive coordinator available and got 7 points. Could take a long time to even sniff what we were. Maybe never.

He should have never been hired. He's clearly in over his head. No other top ten program would have hired him as DC.

Not according to Dabo...

We had to make that hire or else we were gonna lose him. Supposedly there were a lot of programs beating down the door to get him.
In reality, I think Dabo watched too much Ted Lasso and thought he could turn the equipment manager into an all world assistant too.

As far as an OC, I thought he called a good game.

Other than a couple swing passes, the players were in place it make plays. It was missed tackles that really hurt us.
So if you want to say he isn't coaching up his players in the fundamentals, that is fair. But his scheme wasn't the issue.

Defense is slow and can’t tackle. Other than that everything’s fine.

maybe 50th best. Rarely pressured Leonard, and when we did, he was often able to escape and pick up big chunks of yardage.

Agree on one point, not so much the other.
Yes, the D is a concern. It took a pretty sizeable step back last year and it doesn't look much different so far in '23. We have studs. We should have a smothering D.
Offense: You mention getting in the red zone and not scoring. As I recall, that was the story of our bowl game last year against UT, although maybe not as bad. It would seem like a mental thing. I hope it doesn't become a trend.
Stats from last night didn't look nearly as bad as the score, but I am having a real hard time finding comfort in that.

Duke was better than us in every regard. DUKE. I don't care if our offense gained 400 or 4,000 yards; our offense fumbled, bumbled, and sputtered all night, from the opening whistle to the final play. Aside from a couple of drives, we were not sharp and looked unprepared. Cade Klubnick does not look to be in the same league with DW or TL, or even Kyle Parker. We have ZERO downfield passing game (again).
I love Dabo and regard him as the best coach ever at Clemson, but he's getting paid a ton of money, and right now he's got a lot of explaining to do, and it's not just "too many mistakes". If that's gonna be his excuse, I'm calling bull ####### ####, because it goes way beyond that.

Yeah it’s starting to look like a situation where you pay the guy like he’s the best coach in college football, and all of a sudden he feels like he doesn’t have to work hard anymore. You see it in business all the time. A company is successful and makes tons of money and all of a sudden they forget about their customers.
It’s very clear to me, This team has lots of problems. We still have no wide receiver on the team that anybody’s worried about. The oline looks very soft. The defense looks slow. No fire at all. Bunch of buddies on staff no one else would hire. Etc
Dabo needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask himself if he wants to be a football coach anymore

How are we so inept at blocking on FGs? How is our QB so nervous and making poor throwing decisions? How are our Linebackers not tackling? It’s a total mess…

I agree. I didn't see a single positive from any phase of the game. It was the worst Clemson game I've seen in at least a decade.

We have taken a giant step backwards. We will get zero good offensive recruits with that demonstration last night.

0 sacks, surrendered 28 points to Duke. DUKE! I don’t care if they were 9-4 last year and a “great team”. They are still Duke. There’s not a single player on that team who would be recruited by Clemson.

I don't necessarily disagree but even if we had the 2018 defense we probably lose last night 10 or 13-7.

It does look from watching the defensive product on the field the last year and the beginning of this year that we have a lot more people out of place as compared to years past. The biggest for me is it appears our DBs play a lot softer coverage than we’ve seen under BV. Wes Goodwin may turn out to be a really fine coordinator but stepping into a program with the defensive expectations like the one at Clemson is doing a disservice to him. The stage is much too bright to be learning on the job.

I wonder how well CWG actually tackles; I think we all know that CBV was a dirty tackler.

When you score, only seven points……and look at that first half in particular, you have major issues on the OL and with the WR. Against Duke.
All props to Duke, and no offense to them …but ppl have got to stop acting like this was a great duke team. They are a nice team and that’s about it. A top-five team would’ve destroyed them by five touchdowns or more.
That offense, particularly in the first half, was a hot steaming full of #### garbage. Zero reason for our offense to look that ######…NONE.
Our OL room needs to be larger…. And we have not recruited good enough at wild receiver. The current class is admittedly a step in the right direction.

the Duke QB. Neither was he the one missing tackles when we had numerous chances to stop Duke drives. At some point, players have to look in the mirror and take ownership of their own poor play. You can have the best defensive scheme in the world, and if the players just don't tackle, it all gets blown up. Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. THAT is what is wrong from last night, not Wes Goodwin schemes.

Let's start with NO SACKS. All of our TOP talent didn't show up. No killer instinct, no gang tackling. No setting the edge. Where were our elite linebackers? Arm tackling and bad lines on tackling were everywhere. The loss of Breese, Trent , and Murphy was on FULL display. No penetration, and no containment. Was XT even in the game. You can say Wes had them in the wrong formations, but what I saw was no heart. Somebody on that sideline needs to be yelling. No emotion is what I saw. We just don't have it. BV was liked and feared by his players. He pushed them hard. I don't see that anymore.

two field goals in the first half. Offense gave up turnover after turnover and the final score was lopsided.
You put that on the defense? Really?
