Conference Affiliation is NOT about the W&Ls

Jun 21, 2012, 12:00 PM

it's about the money. And you will not get the W&Ls without it.

Everyone who thinks that "the ACC is the easier road" needs to think again. If it were a level playing field, then yes. But it won't be. And it won't be because other programs in the top 4 conferences will be able to outspend us, and that will leave us behind.

Money SHOULD be the primary motivator in changing conferences. Alas, it may not be and we may stuck where we are - and we will lament it when it's too late.

No one knows how the money will be split and the 3M difference in TV revenue is not enough to matter. I agree if playoff money and bowl money are huge factors then we should move but no one has any idea of how that will work out yet.

The $3M is a myth

Jun 21, 2012, 12:05 PM

It is more than that due to 3rd tier rights and the payout of the closed bowl that the SEC/Big12 have. It is closer to $10M and could increase depending on how the BCS shakes out.

You have no idea if that is true or not. All the SEC and Big 12 said was they will have a game and hope to make that kind of money. If they can add another bowl game on top of what is in place and include the "champion" so can everyone else.

No one is capitalizing on 3rd Tier rights currently and they ACC has openings to look at that kind of thing in the future. Everyone is in freak out mode right now and nothing is even set in stone right now.

Its not significant money.

Jun 21, 2012, 12:04 PM

Current ACC deal is 17M/year
Rumored B12 deal is 20M/year

ACC exit fee is 20M
Half payout from B12 for 3 or so years

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that 17M is back loaded...we don't get it off the start...we

Jun 21, 2012, 12:06 PM

get $13M to start off with.

ALL deals are "backloaded"***

Jun 21, 2012, 12:07 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so let's us the amount we are getting now for comparison

Jun 21, 2012, 12:08 PM

sake..let's discuss $13M vs what we would get over there instead of $17M we get in down the road.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so our 13M vs. their 17M. Still not significant money.

Jun 21, 2012, 12:10 PM

That's five years to even pay off the exit fee.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

how do you know what they've already negotiated with ESPN

Jun 21, 2012, 12:17 PM

etc based upon two more schools like us and FSU joining? They could have $22M on the table. I'm going to leave $ decisions to those who negotiate us staying and leaving. They will have calculations out the wazooo and I'm certain they have done those already.

If it's $22M as I've read....$9M a year would suffice but this isn't a decision based on one yr or even 5 yrs...It's going to be decision based on long term health vs your rivals. Let's just say the difference is $5M...over a ten yr period even with an exit fee the difference with the contract staying the same is $30M. Do you think Clemson could use an additional $30M...do you think the coaches would turn down an additional $30M? I don't think so especially in this climate.

See above for the myth of the 3M$ differrence

Jun 21, 2012, 12:08 PM [ in reply to Its not significant money. ]

it's not - closer to 10 and perhaps 20 depending on how the BCS distribution goes. That's insignificant?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can't argue with your mythical numbers.

Jun 21, 2012, 12:12 PM

Like ive said before. We already make money off of 3rd tier rights. How much more do we get for two football games and 6 bball games? Not much.

Re: Conference Affiliation is NOT about the W&Ls

Jun 21, 2012, 12:45 PM

What all of you are forgetting is why the other conferences have better contracts with ESPN than the ACC. It is because the teams within the conference are actually winning things other than their conference! The SEC isn't great because they are the SEC or that their commisioner is brilliant, its because the teams within the conference have won NC's recently. They also beat teams from other conferences regularly. All of this makes them relevant on a national scale. If Clemson, FSU, Miami, VT, (all teams capable of winning) start actually winning in Bowl games and beating teams from other conferences, the ACC will be able to re-negotiate a deal similar to the SEC or whoever! The SEC,Big 12, Big 10 or whoever, wouldn't have a good name without the teams within those conf. winning!! This isn't about the name on the conference, it is about the teams within the conference actually performing. We take care of our business and have one or two other teams step up and the ACC will be considered along with the rest. We can change conferences all we want but until we start winning, we will allways be a second tier team! We recruit well enough to win now, Clemson needs to take care of itself and everything else will fall in line. The conference stuff is just an excuse. FSU was in the NC game numerous times in a conference that was actually worse than it is now!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

TU, I see some have a problem with the truth.

Jun 21, 2012, 12:58 PM

They have that "we F'ed the conference by losing the Orange Bowl", so let's run now mentality. I wonder how many more millions our crappy Commish could have gotten us with 2 recent BCS victories going into the negotiations ?

People don't want the truth, h3ll we helped make this bed,we'll help get out of it by winning on the field.

I guess they want to be the USuC of the BIG 12. Get the $$$ but not contribute.

It'd be totally different situation if we were owning this conference with an 80-0 conference record the last 10 years.
