Coffee and a morning's stroll on Staten Island
May 14, 2018, 7:34 AM
|
|
The tug is currently set for repairs , and we have had a few days of down time at Caddell's Shipyard in the Port Richmond area of Staten Island , NY . ( The Forgotten Burrough , as it were ) . I took a short walk down to Sailor's Snug Harbor which is very close to the shipyard and found a little bit of paradise . There are several well planted formal and informal gardens. There is a memorial garden for the FDNY , a memory walk garden for 9/11 and even a Japanese-style garden planted by Japanese citizens about 20 years ago ...complete with pagoda ( can be leased for weddings, bahmitzvah etc. ) .
There are historical buildings dating back to the early 18th century when the Dutch still owned the real estate . There are two museums and an outdoor amphitheater as well. Checking out the Old Governor's House ... I read a placard that says it has hosted some ghost hunter program twice in it's history ...apparently the long dead governor doesn't like visitors .
Anyway , just a note about this place is that it was where sailors of all nationalities , creeds , religious faiths and far flung travels could have a meal and a bath and sleep for free while they were here in NYC loading or unloading their wares . Really great little visit , nice and peaceful and quiet .If you get the chance check it out , best place I've been in NYC since being cast here by my company in 2011 .

There she sits , awaiting the blocks . The shoe and strut on her starboard side decided to become unattached and we need some wheel kinks worked out .

Tigerdug --- That's a lot of height. What is the draft and do you have lots of weight below the water line to offset that height. Looks like a stiff wind would blow it over. What's the rated HP?
And more questions. Do they still have Harbor Masters, and, if so, do you have to use their services or are you free to do your own docking, etc.? . My comments and questions indicate my high degree of ignorance so please don't laugh so hard you spill your coffee.

She's 48 ft from the waterline to the top of the mast , Joe ... with a full load of water and fuel she is a little less than that . Draft is 10 ft , and surprisingly she rides pretty good for a flat faced pushboat . Harbor Master is still a thing and probably always will be now that Homeland Security is involved in American shipping . Since 9/11 their roles have actually grown to include MARSEC security awareness and it's derivatives. We're only involved with USCG port traffic control , the HM is a seperate entity .

Culture !!! It warms the cockles of my heart to come to the board on a Monday morning and find a post just loaded with culture, something badly needed by members and visitors on Tigernet. We all owe TigerDug a debt of gratitude for the sacrifices he made to bring to us tidbits of history that few, if any, posters on this board were even aware.

How many people does it take to run that tug? It looks to be 4 floors high what’s on each floor?

Upper deck is the wheelhouse , below that is the captain's staeroom , below that are the other three staterooms and a head , and below that is the galley and another head . Below that is the engine room and terminal gear . Below that is the Kill Van Kull , lol .

I can't agree with you more, Joe - it's kind of a rare pleasure, like your own posts. And speaking of culture, here's a little more (I Blame this both on my lateral thinking and the inherently romantic tendencies that often get in my way.) Hope someone can enjoy it:
Sea Fever
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

Small house, I love old houses like that. I never realized the tugs you were captain ????? of were so big and required that big of a crew. Looks like a fun job!
WTC education building is really small too.

Guess we just didn't require as much space in those days , huh ? That Governor's House looks to be around 2000 or so SQ FT . And you're right , the WTC education center can't be more than around 650 .

Have been reading and following your travels. Read your part awhile back on passing thru bridges, etc. Have spent a lot of time on the water and have great respect for tugs and what they do. Awesome power. Most tug traffic I have experienced was on the TennTom....lots of hairpins. Captains were very courteous and helpful.

I travel a good bit with my job and recently brought a drone I am trying to grab some photos while I travel. Being in the rail industry (transportation similar to you) I get to see some cool areas sometimes and 28 years into my career now I thought I would start documenting some of it.

Sorry man , they weren't opened up yet when I was walking by ... but they are very nice . Pagoda has bathrooms , a large dining hall and plenty of covered patio space for dancing or whatever .

There's no koi pond , curiously ... but tons of bamboo and native fauna to include aralia , various japonica and of course multiple native flowering plants and ferns which I have no idea how to label . Beautiful set up .

It's a live-on tug , so it is occupied 24/7 and 365 . We do bunkering in NYC , so she never leaves except to go load barges or discharge them in Albany ( up tje Hudson about 18 hrs ) , various harbors on the north and south shores of Long island ( Oyster Bay , NY - Stamford , CT - Sheepshead Bay , NY , Port Jefferson NY etc. ) and the rare foray into Jersey points along the shore . We stay in NY/NJ almost exclusively .
My crew does 20/10 hitches , so there is a rotation for 2 crewmen of 20 days aboard , and 10 days home . There are 6 of us total , but only 4 onboard at all times .

I sort of always knew I wanted to work on the water, even at a young age . I didn't get to attend college , and at around 23 I moved out to Memphis TN on a whim. I kicked around there by the river for a few months . Met a guy in a bar one night who happened to live in the city and was an engineer on a tug for a local company named Waxler Towing . I was on a boat as a green deckhand within a week and haven't looked back . 25 + years now and I must say it has been a hoot . Planning to retire at 60 .

Lol , couldn't even idle one of our 6 cylinder generators on that ... for more than about an hour .
With all that boat running you do on the Wando we oughta try and get you to sit for the captain's exam .. maybe I get some fishing advice in return for helping you pass the celestial navigation ?

Tigerdug, it's nice to be at peace with ones self. The husband of the seventh child of my great grand father x 4 is buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery (Plot 12753) in Brooklyn. He was captured while serving in the CSA, transported to New York where he died from disease while imprisoned sometime in 1865. His family for many years knew only that he did not return home. He is resting in a place far from home and over the years has not had many visitors. From one Tiger to another if you ever pass that way would you mind laying a single red and white rose on the grave. That way he will know he is not forgotten. Thanks.
