I tore my ACL skiing along with my LCL, MCL. Wasn't a complete tear but my knee swelled up like a basketball and I could not put any weight on it without feeling severe pain. I was in crutches for only a week before I can walk but I wore a knee brace for months.

Yes. Some non-athletes and older people may choose to not repair a torn ACL because of the length of rehab, etc. ACL keeps the knee from rotating backwards during quick stops and turns. My son just finished rehab from a torn ACL.
