UGA Player Spotlight - TE Darnell Washington
Jul 21, 2021, 4:19 PM
|
|
The main reason I'm on The T-Net is to learn about Clemson's players from the people that would know the best, and I appreciate the folks that take the time to share some of the insights that fans know about their players. In that spirit, I thought some of you may enjoy seeing a little more about some of the guys to watch when it comes to Clemson's game one opponent UGA.
So, without further ado I'll start with one of the guys that I'm expecting to make a big leap in his second year, Sophomore TE Darnell Washington (6'7" 265 lbs). He played his high school ball in Las Vegas, so he needed a little more seasoning and that was delayed by the loss of spring practice and summer workouts. As one might imagine with his sheer size, Washington was an asset from the beginning with his ability to help block in the run game, and by the end of the season he really started to show flashes of becoming a factor in the passing game as well with 5 catches on 7 targets over the last two games.
The majority of his snaps on passing plays were as an in-line TE (~63%), but he also saw some plays in the slot (~30%), with just a few out wide (~6%). With the loss of UGA's security blanket WR George Pickens, many think Washington can become one of the reliable options that the QB can just toss it up to and he'll make good things happen.

Pickens tore his ACL in the Spring and is out for the forseeable future. Possibly/Likely has played his last college snap.

I think that you missed a lot, and we can start with this is a Clemson Tiger board, and we couldn't give a chit about UGA, or their fans. Secondly, Dabo Swinney is our HC, and it is he and his staff that will make the plans of how our Tiger FB will play UGA, or any other team on our schedule, so take your bull chit to UGA board!!!!

if you are going to link highlight videos, you may want to consider displaying games against opponents with an actual pulse. No one is going to be particularly impressed by performances against Cincinnati and Kentucky.

While not an unfair point, Cincinnati's defense gets a ton of respect. They finished last year as PFF's highest graded defense with an overall grade of 92.1 just edging out UGA at 92.0. Now I certainly can see the argument of playing lesser competition, but they've got some dudes on that side of the ball and their now ex-DC was really good at getting them in the right position at the right time.

Yup but that's was largely due to playing a weak schedule.

At one time they were around 118. I think they ended the year around 75.

Sorry, but I'm unsure what stat you're referencing with 118 and 75?

Here’s the one that really shows what kind of defense you have.

Thanks for posting. Cincinnati tied with Clemson at #2 on that list. Lots of respect there.

I’m sure it’s just me, but I don’t care about any players on a team we play. No offense to you Georgia people because this in one of the few posts that I have seen that isn’t a meaningless comparison to Clemson players or obnoxious posturing, but nonetheless, I just don’t care. Hope you find what you are looking for though.

If you want good insights go to YouTube and subscribe to TigerNet. Watch the coaches (each position ) and they give good insights on players.
On defense everyone is back except your transfer DK that we suspended for off field issues. We also lost Mike Jones to transfer (to LSU). We have 6 scholarship CB’s so not expecting any weakness over loading DK. Mike Jones was splitting time with Trenton Simpson so expecting Simpson to be all American caliber. We have two starting 2019 DE’s that missed last year back for this year so we have 5 starters returning.

I'll make this short and to the point

Darnell Washington may be a fine player, but if Arik Gilbert gets things cleared up, he will make everybody at UGA forget about Darnell Washington. Put that in the bank. His talent is comparable to Kyle Pitts.
If Gilbert doesn't sort things out, Washington might end up being a key player on their offense. However, I'll repeat one report about him from last year that I agreed with: He seems like one of those guys who peaked in HS and didn't have another gear to shift into for college. We'll see.
P.S: It's possible Gilbert is moved out wide because he is so athletic. This would leave the TE position open for Washington.

Kirby confirmed that Arik is working out with the WRs during SEC Media Days. Here's a report on it.
“He’s a playmaker—a guy who you need to get the ball in his hands,” Smart said. “He’s worked out with the wide receiver group; that’s where he indicated he wanted to work and train at. That’s been a big part of what he wants to do. We’ve got to find out if he can sustain, if he’s got the stamina at that position to play that position, to play the X, to play the Z, play the slot. We’ll find ways to move him around. When you have a coordinator like Coach Monken, that’s what he does.
“When you’re in the NFL, you’ve got guys all over. You’ve got Mike Evans over here, you’ve got people you’ve got to move around. We know Arik Gilbert is going to be a big part of that.”
As to Washington reaching his peak in HS, that certainly is possible. Not many guys that big are out there catching passes. If he's not done growing, which is a scary thought in and of itself, he may grow out of being a TE and right into being a LT. With that being said, I don't care who the competition was, that first clip with him against Cincinnati in the bowl game is scary. Guys that size shouldn't be able to move like that.
