AR protection of a family I know
Feb 15, 2018, 10:22 AM

I'll make it quick........ Basically some armed bandits tried to break into a friends home and also steal his vehicle. He ran out of the house and shot at them with his AR (there was 3 bad guys there) but didn't hit any of them. He scared the shayatt out of em and they fled. Ironic thing was one dude was an x #### football player. All of them had a auto theft ring going and were eventually arrested thanks to the guy chasing one of them down. He wasn't afraid to confront multiple crooks because he had the firepower to defend his family.

Someone tried to steal the tires off my dad's new

4 runner when I was a kid (eventually was my first car). Heard something bang on the ground in the driveway. Looked out the window and saw two kids working on removing the tires. Dad got his 12 gauge shotgun, walked around the back of the house into the driveway, walked up to the truck with the gun. They saw him and bolted. JUST as they started to run he fired a shot straight up in the air. I've never seen a human run so fast. Walked out to the street and found their pickup truck with the license plate covered. Dad and I sat on the tailgate with the shotgun and waited for the police to arrive. About 10 minutes after the cop arrived, two kids came walking back up the road to their car.
One was the QB at Irmo HS (not Rodney Williams), and the other we never knew about. They got off on PTI I think. Dad was not cited for firing a shotgun in the city limits thankfully. Cop laughed his ### off when dad told him.

In that particular case, the shotgun has more effect.

It's a much more dramatic weapon to shoot.

for running out of the house firing the gun.
In many municipalities, Castle Doctrine only applies to within the walls of your house and not the yard.

I'm sure the fact that the guys were armed

is why they thanks him instead of arresting him. All 3 were armed with stolen handguns.

a few years ago in my town.
Town laws say that if it's at night, you can protect your yard with deadly force. If it's during the day, it's attempted murder.
Luckily this was about 11 pm so he wasn't tried for anything.
No idea how this is a thing since attempted murder seems like a state/federal case.

How did things work out for that homeowner in Walhalla the other night?
Anecdotal stories are useless.

Nope. I have two guns and am a staunch believer in the 2nd amendment as referencing individual ownership rights.
I'm just not illogical enough to think the bad guy is going to look at my gun, decide it's only a shotgun and laugh at it. I'm sure he won't care to differentiate between a shotgun and an AR-15.

I'm all for owning an AR, but it's not the best choice for

home defense in the vast majority of situations. You have to be careful with what's behind the target in that situation.
Handgun with hollow points or a shotgun is usually a better bet.
AR is better for engaging targets at 50+ yards and if you don't care where the rounds that don't find their target end up. Unless there are like 5 or 6 dudes invading your home and you need 30 rounds locked and loaded or you live out by yourself...

yea most criminals know the sound of a Shotgun Pump.
Pistol with a laser sight is also a nice deterrent. A guy sees a bright red dot on his chest he will take note.

AR's are great for home defense.
I have worked in the gun industry for some time, and built many of my own.
Most SWAT teams prefer AR carbines for apartments and places where overshooting through a wall and killing another occupant is a major risk.
An AR-15 with a shorter barrel (14 inches or shorter) with a low twist rate (1:10 twist or lower) shooting a lightweight, hollow point bullet (such as a 40 grain varmint round) is more effective for indoor, home defense than many other options.
My home defense weapon is an AR-15 pistol with an 8.5" barrel, loaded with 45 grain Hornady varmint hollow points. They don't over-penetrate and are effective at close range.

A Remington Model 783 deer rifle would have been just as effective, yes?

Glad it worked out for him, but turning a robbery into a gun fight is a good way to get him or his family hurt.
