All the Haters should think about this

Jun 10, 2012, 8:28 PM

Yes we were bad defensively last year and yes we were embarrassed in the bowl game, but... for those that hate on Dabo, I think it is actually a credit to him that we were so bad defensively and had so many issues there and STILL managed to win 10 games and win the conference. I think the things accomplished far out weigh the things not, last season, and that further, they speak to excellent leadership to hold things together enough to reach those accomplishments, coulda fell apart after NC St or USuC, but didn't. Never a perfect situation, but winners face adversity and find a way to get it done. For the most part we did that last year!

Had we beat USuC, but lost to Maryland or Auburn or someone

Jun 10, 2012, 8:43 PM

like that to where we still couldve won the ACC then everyone would be saying what an incredible year it was. I know beating USuC should never be the standard, but I think after losing 3 straight, it has become that way. Beat USuC and still win 10 games, I think a lot more people will be on board.

And youre right, the fact that we went 104 with a terrible defense was pretty impressive. Shows that Dabo to a huge leap in the right direction to fix our offenseive woes from 2010. Now lets see if he's made an equal hire for the defense. Im excited about Venables.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Auburn, maybe...

Jun 10, 2012, 8:57 PM

But losing to Maryland or NC State is just inexcusable. Both of those teams are effing TERRIBLE!! That loss in Raleigh is a disgrace, and there's no excuse for it. And, there's no way to reasonably say that Dabo doesn't shoulder the responsibility for that or any facet of the total collapse we had in the last four games.

It was just sheer, dumb luck that we didn't lose to a mediocre Weak Forest team AT HOME. You newbies can sit there and blow smoke about "haters", but if you don't want to face reality, your point of view is worth little.

We dominated VT last year. That's a good thing, and it's why we won the conference. I'm glad we finally won the ACC again. But the collapse in the final four games of the regular season is troublesome, unless you're lacking a brain.

Jun 10, 2012, 9:02 PM

hater than a pumper, but even Ive got to admit that had we lost to Maryland instead and beat USuC, then 10-4 wouldve felt much better than it did. I can forget losses to Maryland. I cant do that when we lose to USuC. To prove my point count how many times we've lost GT since 2006. Count how many times we've lost to Maryland since 2006. Now count how many times we've lost to USuC since 2006. You can spit our loss total to USuC since 2006 right out. The ones to Maryland and GT may take a second. Losing to Maryland, NCST, GT, and other teams I can forgive with a big win and an ACCC. But losing to USuC just isnt okay.

Again, back to reality...

Jun 10, 2012, 9:13 PM

And I say this as a Clemson University graduate, life-long fan, Tigernet member dang-near since the inception of this website:

I hate losing to the coots as much as anyone here - but right now they are a MUCH better football program than NC State, or Maryland, or GT, or Weak Forest. Getting anally raped by NC State, almost losing to that pathectic Maryland team, and dang-near screwing the pooch against WAKE FOREST AT HOME LAST YEAR, well... if that's MUCH more troublesome than losing to a much stronger program on that road.

If you take the emotion and the pride of the rivalry out of your thought process and just think about this using logic and common sense, you have to admit this makes sense. There's NO EFFING way that we should have lost to NC State, and there's NO EFFING WAY that we should have been on the ropes against WOFFORD OR WAKE FOREST!! That sort of inconsistency is indicative of big problems, and it was almost all on the defensive side last year. I'm glad Dabo made a change there, but he also hired the guy - so he has to take ultimate responsibility for the collapse.

In my opinion Dabo still has a lot to prove. We'll see if he has a defense this year. If not, he's got problems.

Why does everyone have to post their credentials to justify what a big fan they are? I say this as a life-long Clemson fan, a former walk-on to the FB team, and Clemson graduate Class of 2012: Id rather lose a ######## game to Maryland or NCST this year versus getting slaughtered by our rival for a fourth consecutive year.

The WF was ugly. They refused to win that game by missing two FGs which let us pull it out. But Ill take it. Auburn won a NC by winning a ton of ugly games two years ago. Think they feel bad about that? Bama gave up over 300yds rushing to Georgia Southern last year. How many fans look back on that now and feel bad about it. Why are so many people still mad about the WF game? It was ugly, but we won. After it happened, I was upset bc I knew we couldnt play like that down the stretch and be successful, but why be mad about it 7 months later?

I love how people feel the need to point out the failures of

Jun 10, 2012, 9:32 PM

other teams and coaches, as if that has anything to do with Clemson. It's nothing but an excuse, which is enabling and accepting mediocrity. Reminds me of TB. "Half the teams in the country lost Saturday."

If your kid said, "but dad, all the other kids were doing it", you'd tell him excuses are unacceptable. So why make excuses for Dabo? He's being paid millions to do one thing, win football games!!

Re: I love how people feel the need to point out the failures of

Jun 10, 2012, 9:36 PM

The game Im talking about is WF. You said hes paid to do one thing, "win football games". He did win the game! Thats why I cant figure out after all these months why someone would take the time to complain about what an ugly game it was. Do we really think Clemson FB is above winning an ugly game? Who do some of our fans think we are, honestly?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sure, we'll take an ugly win over a loss any day...

Jun 10, 2012, 9:51 PM

What we're talking about here is inconsistency. If you really were on the football team, then you KNOW that VT is a stronger, better football team than Maryland or NC State. NC State punked us. Why did that happen? Wake Forest missed a gimme FG that let us squeak by with a W AT HOME. Wake Forest is MEDIOCRE. Again, why did that happen? We were the ACC CHAMPS, for pete's sake... why the effing inconsistency??

It's pretty clear that our defense was terrible last year. Worse than terrible; dang near non-existent. THAT'S why we lost to a very average GT team, and that's why we got embarrassed AGAIN by the coots. That's why we were in a shootout with WOFFORD. Dabo is a real nice guy and I like him... but he better get a real defense or he's gonna have a problem.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope he has found a real DC. Only time will tell...

Jun 10, 2012, 10:02 PM

And I do have a huge problem with being that inconsistent. We have the ability to look so good, and then so bad. I think a lot of that comes from the mentality of the team which can be directly influenced by the coaching staff. Mind set falls on Dabo, no doubt.

As far as winning ugly games, Ill complain during the season after one for sure. I pay huge attention to detail and I know that when we get away with mistakes against WF, we're setting ourselves up for disappointed against USuC bc theyll exploit those mistakes. Some people think only the reults matter, and that is mostly all that matters. But how you get to those results matter a whole #### of a lot, too. You seem to get that and it nice to see there are still some fans out there with enough sense to know that.

I know I read a post of yours saying you were going stay off Dabo until the season is underway?? So... what happened to the laying low?? Just curious??

That post was clearly more about excuse makers than Dabo.

Jun 10, 2012, 10:01 PM [ in reply to Re: Again, back to reality... ]

We won in a shootout because we have the best WR and kick returner in the country. We were in a shootout with them because our defense was disgracefully bad... a fact confirmed by their pathetic performance in the Orange Bowl.

I'm sorry, but Dabo owns that. It's just stupid to give him a pass because we dominated VT last year.

Dabo Swinney still has a LOT to prove.

Bobby Doddery coach of the year and yes he has a lot to prove just as 98% of coaches do. But pretty good in 2 Acc title games in first ever 3 yrs of coaching. Give me a list of how many coaches have done that? Also has hired 2 of the best coordinators in the country.

I know. Our conversation was about losing to the Coots

Jun 10, 2012, 10:05 PM [ in reply to Re: Again, back to reality... ]

vs beating Maryland. I think a lot more fans would feel better about a 10-4 season where we lose to Mary and beat USuC. We beat Maryland last year. I think the defense will be fixed, we were just duscussing the mind set of the fans and how losing to one team versus another can have a bigger effect on the pulse of the fanbase.
