ACC Tiebreaker Question

Sep 21, 2016, 9:33 AM

has anyone seen a link to the actual rules? All I've seen are articles like the ESPN one that paraphrases the rules and has quotes from the league based on some generic questions. Does the rule still have the below provision in it as it has had for a number of years? That is, did the league just substitute the 3rd party analytics in for the BCS/CFB rankings or did they do away with this portion also?:

"unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the two-team tiebreaking procedure shall be applied between the top two ranked tied teams."

Seems strange if they did away with that portion- given it's been in effect since I believe the beginning of division formation and the only real reason for going with the 3rd party rankings was a timing issue of not having the CFB rankings. If I had to bet, I imagine this is still in place and we're just be subjected to some shoddy journalism. Maybe I'm wrong but has anyone seen the actual official rules for 2016 anywhere.

Have not seen any rules about it. I remember a few years ago there was a three way tie in the Big 12 between Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech. They made the decision off of BCS rank. I hope they don't use this because it would hurt us the most, losing last.

Didn't I read that the ACC has hired an independent firm to determine the winner in the event of a tie?

you did but that ranking replaces BCS/CFB rankings which

had been in effect as the ACC tiebreaker but unused for many years. However, none of the articles on using the 3rd party rankings addresses the 2nd part of the rule that has been in effect for many years which is the part I included in quotes above. If the 2nd place team in the rankings is within 5 spots of the 1st and the 2nd team beat the 1st team H2H, then it is the 2nd team in the rankings that advances. That has always been in the rules, it's just the articles of the last few days fail to address whether that portion has been removed this year or is still in effect.
