Question regarding stopping/containing Henry
Jan 8, 2016, 9:49 AM
|
|
We run a 4-3 defense. If Shaq is healthy and can play DE, what would you guys think about playing one of our DE's like Bryant or Yeargin as the MLB? We need someone that can stop Henry in his tracks and stuff the run. It's probably a waste of space for me to even ask since I doubt Dabo and Venables would do something drastic to stop Henry.
While I'm at it, do you guys think we may see Wilkins play on 4th and short as the running back or possibly a FB?

We held OU's rushing attack to 67 yards in 33 tries, MSU held Henry to 75 for the game. I dont think we need to make any drastic moves to stop Henry. Wilkins could be a surprise at TE.

Henry was curiously un-involved in the MSU game. Only 20 carries.

Henry wasn't schemed to carry the ball all that much against MSU. I think LK knew that MSU was going to stack the box with 8 players to stop him, which they did, so he game planned to let Coker win the game. I wouldn't look at the MSU game as any indicator of what Henry is or is not capable of. I think the key to stopping him with minimal players is to get a hit on him before his 3rd step. After his 4th step he is usually at or near top speed and hard to catch at that point.

No, I don't know if you realize the incredible mental strain for a MLB. They simply wouldn't know what to do. It isn't as simple as just saying fit that run gap or whatever. Bama even with Coker would have a field day throwing all over that. I wouldn't be opposed to getting into the 4-3 or even walking down Kearse or Green and playing essentially a 4-4 with a 1 high safety and mixing Cover 3 and Cover 1 press and bump and run. Basically says hey we have a 6-4 athletic freak to help in run support or cover your TE, our corners are good enough to shut down your 2 relevant receivers and we are sticking with a 7-8 man box and daring you test us in the run game or the pass game.
They will also get into different packages and go 4-5 wide at times. We actually might have more trouble with that though I don't know. We held up fine against UNC "when it mattered" plus Coker can't run like Marquise or Mayfield even if he is a decent athlete. We also shutout OU for the whole second half.

If you guys try and stack the box with 7 or 8 men then you are going to leave at least one of our WR/TE's in the open. If Coker is able to recognize that then you're toast. Yes, you will probably shut down Henry by doing that but the cost will be pretty high. Just ask MSU. I also would advise caution in comparing OU and Bama...

Henry cannot be stopped. Or contained. End of discussion.

MSU didn't do much at all against Henry. He wasn't game planned to win the game as much as Coker was...

If we can't contain Henry, he will be one of the very few elite backs we failed on. After Cook ran the first play for a touchdown against us, he was pretty much a non-factor the rest of the fame other than one other run. He got about 95% of his yardage on 2 runs.

My concern is not necessarily with Henry himself, but more

with the fact that is seems to take the D a few series to get run-tough. I nearly lost my mind when Dalvin Cook ripped off a few long runs early against FSU before we shut him down. Seems like we've done that a few other times too. We can't afford to give up big plays on the ground early just because we're trying to see how fast someone can run for the first few plays.

I have little doubt Henry will get his. All good running backs do. However, he wont beat us by himself. Hope Coker can last the first half.
