possible division alignment if ND/PSU were added

Jun 23, 2012, 3:09 PM

I've never understood the whole Miami to north thing, but apparently there is something to it, plus it would give both divisions an inroad into Florida recruiting ground. Vatech seems to be the exact opposite, being one of the northernmost schools in the conference, seem to very much be against playing in a northern division. I, personally, have always been skeptical of all 4 nc schools in one division. So how about this alignment

NORTH
Miami
Nc state
Wake forest
Notre Dame
Penn st
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Boston college

SOUTH
Florida st
Georgia tech
Clemson
Unc
Duke
Virginia
Vatech
Maryland

PSU fans hate the big 10 and wanted to go to the acc years

Jun 23, 2012, 4:09 PM

back but the acc turned them down. the ones who want to stay cite money not football. they are a northeast team stuck in a mid west league. BC Pitt Cuse Rutgers and Notre Dame are their traditional rivals.

lots of reasons they won't leave but those and some others are reasons they would.

Ok if you are really ready to have a discussion instead of

sling mud then lets talk.

I don't really think PSU will ever come to the ACC. The admin and leadership like the Big Ten for a number of reasons. Money, the CIC, the TV exposure in new markets, etc.

from a football perspective a lot of fans (football) dislike the Big Ten. They are less accepted after all these years than Neb after one season.

Natural rivals are eastern teams because they are an eastern team. BC Cuse Pitt etc.

They were promised more eastern expansion or Notre Dame (another rival) when they joined. the Big ten dragged their feet and then added Neb to go to 12.

Fans know that ND plus PSU equals the same money in the ACC.

throw on top of that how the fans have been treated by the the big ten schools with the whole sandusky deal and a lot not all would like to move out. also, Paternos name was taken off the trophy. many (fans) have talked about going to a new league just for a fresh start

the rumors where so bad at one time PSU officials had to reiterate in interviews the satisfaction with the Big ten.

Jun 23, 2012, 5:29 PM

they are going to try and survive the tidal wave of lawsuits about to come their way as a result of Sandusky. They don't have the time/energy to entertain moving anywhere right now. They are going to try and tread water for the next 5 yrs and hope they can move on.

A "portion" of Penn State fans would support such a move. Now that's different from widespread support that I interpreted the earlier post. The money disadvantage going to the ACC was pointed out. Also the basketball-first philosophy of the ACC was pointed out as a con. In the final analysis, conference shifts are primarily about the money. Consequently, Penn State will never, never leave the Big 10 for the ACC. Ever!!!!

Jun 23, 2012, 4:23 PM [ in reply to PSU fans hate the big 10 and wanted to go to the acc years ]

I think Penn State would be a good fit for the ACC. (academically & geographically especially)

Notre Dame would bring an elite football program (although they haven't performed that way lately) but, I think they are a better fit for the Big 10. (based on geography)

The ACC should have added Penn State and West Virginia IMO. (and kept their eye on UCONN & Georgetown for future expansion)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: PSU fans hate the big 10 and wanted to go to the acc years

Jun 23, 2012, 4:36 PM

I partially agree with that. Yes they are a great fit academically. They would bring football money with them for sure. On the Geography part we tend to think in terms of North and South. One of the big reasons PSU does not like the big Ten is because they are stuck on the outskirts of the league. BC Pitt CUSE Rutgers are their natural rivals. They hate the fact that the closest away game is OSU.

the 10 year grant of rights and partnerships with BiG ten research hospitals are some big reasons they will stay put.

I honestly couldn't see them leaving the big myself, but I have heard there were rumors of them not being happy. If that's the case swofford should be all over this (although I'm sure he's not), seeing how these are probably the only football oriented schools that would even remotely be a possibility. No other BIG school and certainly no SEC schools would be interested. This is his only shot.

Re: PSU fans hate the big 10 and wanted to go to the acc years

Jun 23, 2012, 4:37 PM

The NCAA needs to dissolve the current conferences, reorganize (based on geography) and get real about oversight/equality. College Athletics is currently blatantly corrupt IMO.

Allowing Notre Dame to have it's own TV contract with NBC, and now Texas it's own TV network puts other programs at a recruiting disadvantage. Both are directly opposed to the NCAA's mission of fairness & equality.

Penn State

Jun 23, 2012, 4:20 PM [ in reply to Re: possible division alignment if ND/PSU were added ]

I doubt if Penn State would leave the B1G, but the ACC does have some advantages for them.

1. The ACC would give them exposure to the rich recruiting grounds in the states of Florida and Georgia. This is big.

2. Most Penn State alumni are on the East Coast, not the Midwest

3. ACC schools like Pitt, Syracuse, BC, and Maryland are closer to them than almost anyone in the B1G.

If you're talking absolute geographic sense, then yes this makes more sense other than Miami in the north. That being said, I also have them in the north, but the same reason I would have them there is the same reason I would have vatech in the south. Vatech has been adamantly against being in a northern division(AKA old big east). Also, not quite as much national exposure for the south when half of your conference is in the same state which is the reason I would prefer splitting the north Carolina schools.

as in the above conversation. i don't think they will come but you would be subtracting a huge portion of that revenue in PSU and then adding it to the ACC. So its not exact apples to apples. but i agree they are not likely to leave the cash cow they have to chase the one they might get.
