DEs next year

Let's just start off by saying that everyone in that room is going to improve under Chris Rumph. He's a great coach and an absolute homerun hire by Dabo. Getting him back on the staff is huge.

TJ Parker is an All-ACC lock, with All-American type of potential. After him though...

Cade Denhoff is a rotational player, not someone that we can realistically rely on as a starter. Rumph could obviously change that, but I don't know.

AJ Hoffler has the highest potential purely as a pass rusher. I'm excited to how much better he gets under Rumph. I still think he needs one more year as a rotational guy though.

Zaire Patterson has the physical tools but hasn't played in 3 years. Unless he makes a huge jump under Rumph, I can't see us getting starter snaps out of him next year.

Jaheim Lawson can be a pretty solid pass rusher, but I don't believe he's a 4 down guy. I like him as a backup that comes in on 3rd down to rush the passer.

Darien Mayo has a pretty high ceiling. I think he's closer to Hoffler than to Parker. Needs 1-2 years to develop into a really good player for us.

Adam Kissayi is almost certainly headed for a redshirt season. But he has a similar build as Mayo. He probably needs 2-3 years of development before becoming a consistent contributor.

7 DEs is not enough. We need one more. We could offer a recruit late in the cycle. However, it makes much more sense to bring someone in from the portal. We need someone to start opposite of TJ Parker. Denhoff and Hoffler has backups would actually be really good. Offers need to go out soon.

At least he will have a DE coach that can develop him, if he decides to go that route. Seems like an option given the depth ad DT.

I still think the portal makes the most sense. Burley was injured all of last season. We need him to see snaps at DT this year. He will probably be the full time starter next to Woods in 2025.

Don’t disagree. Would like to see a portal pick up. Appreciated the list and thoughtful post… was just throwing another potential name in the mix. Almost like CW42 and Ruke, he could potentially be one of those guys that gets some DE experience along the way. Long term, DT makes sense.

It also says he plays H-back and is a good blocker. We could dang sure use that if we're going to be a "dirt raid" team!

I could see Woods moving outside before Burley, dude is going to be around 6'4 320 next year. We're def way deeper in the middle than the outside. Austin Bryant was 6'5 275 and that was considered big for a DE. Burley and Capehart would be 2 big beast in the middle, much like Wilkins and Big Dex.

Not ideal if we have to stick a 300lb tackle at De in a 4man front, speaks further to the inordinate amount of misses on 4☆s(decent amount of high 4☆s) across the 85 man roster–

It would be nothing for him to lose some lbs if needed, he played alot in high school around the 280 mark and being only 6'2. He's more agile to make the transition if need be. That being said, it probably won't happen, but I could see him take some snaps on the outside in games. Best players need to be on the field.

No doubt a position that the portal could help us in.

Biggest difference this year is you don't have super seniors filling up roster spots. Scholarships.
If there is a kid out there that has experience and is a good cultural fit and can actually contribute as a football player, I think you will see Dabo sign them.

We may need 2 and hope for no injuries. Rumph is an excellent hire but he can't work miracles. That would still leave very little depth.

I bet Rumph has been hitting up portal players since he knew he was headed this way. Dabo just needs to Greenlight them. I'm sure Dabo will provide him whatever tools necessary for him to succeed lest any weakness suffered at the position would fall at his feet.

An impending infusion of talent may also account for coming departures. Recruiting at this position will likely be elevated to the level of success Eason is experiencing , in my humble opinion

Seems like we could just run an NFL D line and have Parker, Woods, Capehart, and Tre Williams in every first down. No one will want to run the ball on that. Rotate players in and out as needed on 2nd and 3rd based on down and distance. Should be lots of 2nd and long. I feel like our DTs are going to be so deep we’ll need to just find more PT for them until Rumph builds up the DE depth chart.

Plus, who are they going to double team? Parker will be more dominant next year. Capehart will be a LOAD for any interior lineman. Woods would likely be a strength mismatch on the other end. Exciting!

Go Tigers!

That could work until we play a team with a fast QB. Would be hard to contain speed players stretching sideline to sideline with nothing but 300+ pounders out there.

RJ Oben (6th year from Duke) and Kyle Kennard (5th year from GT) could be real possibilities at DE. Both of them had more sacks than all of our DEs this year.

Sounds good to me. I guess I'm just being overly cautious with the way the injury bug has hit. I could be wrong, but unless Patterson takes a big step (and Rumph can hopefully) I think it'd be safe to take two.

We kinda knew pwoo was ready. But did anyone really think TJ would be ready as a freshman. Actually, some of the podcasts I'd listened to hinted that Patterson may transfer, not recently, but back in November. Possibly it could be he's staying and hence the freshman transfer.

Him transferring shocked me given the lack of depth. I've got to believe Dabo knew what was up and has something in the works. Yes? No?

Anyway, I love these discussions and breakdown. So thanks to everyone. Have you got a new video out? Tia

Scary thing is Zaire Patterson is one of those players you gotta think has high potential to jump in the portal. Looking at 6 if he leaves and only 1 is a proven commodity. Edge and OT are positions of need out of the portal. WR would just be nice, but I don't think its completely necessary with who comes back and is coming in.

I just can't make myself rely on an incoming freshman at the WR spot. Watkins was one of a kind. Brown and Williams have been productive but not the level needed to get the Tigers offense back to the level it was. I'm not knocking them. It's a giant chasm between those guys and what Sammy brought to the table that year.

If Clemson is turning that portal corner, a highly productive, instant impact guy at the WR spot has to be part of the equation. The current guys on the roster haven't produced that, yet. Cade, any QB for that matter, needs that guy he can count on. Mahomes has Kelce. Allen has Diggs. Hurts has Brown. Burrow has Chase and Higgins. Grisham is on the hook to find THAT guy as much as Cade is on the hook to become that QB.
