Our d now vs previous. Brent was able to be top 10

Aug 24, 2023, 9:09 PM

W less talent in 2012-2013 and then built 2014 into #1. Wes has the players this yr. We need to get back to creating havoc on first and second down. Brent had a knack for doing that from the time he arrived and it was not there last year. With how we look on all 3 levels this yr, I am hoping to see a lot more of that. I do realize Wes had a lot to deal w last year and a lot of the lack of aggression was out of necessity. I think he has more options this yr.

Wes is bringing a lot of talent to the party this year. Optimistic on 2023!

He has the weapons.... if the offense does their job and can put drives together and not have turnovers in our half of the field, our defense will be just fine.

Injuries happen... but i think a big reason for our huge CFP run was a surprisingly very low amount of injuries. We have not been so lucky the last two years. More injuries to starters than I can remember for a very long time. We all know of the other issues over the last two years, but I think the injuries made things seems worse than they really were.

If you make a run, you need luck and some grace from the injury bug. If the boys can stay healthy, its going to be a good year.

Go Tigers !!

When we think of how good BV's defenses were keep in mind Wes was an integral part of that success.

Where are you seeing that our Defense was top 10 for the 2012 season? Total team Defense was in the 60s in 2012, 25th in 2013 and number 1 in 2014.

Brent’s 2012 defense was actually ranked #46 in the nation (see link) and he had these guys (among others) as young talent available.

Vic Beasley
Grady Jarrett
Carlos Watkins
Deshawn Williams
DJ Reader
BJ Goodson
Stephone Anthony
Bashaud Breeland

And his 2012 defense also benefited from an offense with Tajh Boyd, Nuke Hopkins, and Sammy Watkins moving the ball and keeping his D off the field.

Brent took the talent and molded it into a #1 defense, but not in his first season at Clemson. He actually did worse than Wes Goodwin. And Venables had years of experience … he was not a rookie coordinator.

He took over a defense that had just given up 70 pts

and was just generally pretty bad that entire season (except against VT, weirdly).

There was some young talent for him to work with, but he had to start from scratch with those guys.

Yes, I agree. He did for sure, but the huge amount of talent was there for him to build on and he used it. He was an experienced DC.

My only point is that folks should stop denigrating Wes Goodwin’s first year as a coordinator by comparing him to Venables and using Venables entire Clemson tenure in the comparison.

Give Goodwin a chance. Maybe Dabo made a mistake in promoting Wes. But, maybe it turns out to be a genius move in the long run, sort of like When Dabo himself was given a chance.

We’ll know a lot more after the coming season.

…and weirdly the guy who led us to that 70-point debacle …

Kevin Steele, is now Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator.

Did you see the Oklahoma D last year? It takes a couple years to get things rolling, even for Brent. He’s a defensive minded head coach and his side of the ball was atrocious last year, be patient.
