SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. —
Reading Upstate police reports can give you a real appreciation of the confusing situations officers and deputies often encounter in the field.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office has the not-so-lucky honor of filing the most complicated report of the week.

The report said a deputy was called Monday to a home in Chesnee about an incident involving a weapon.

The deputy was met by a man standing on the side of the road next to a front-end loader who had blood on the side of his face.

The man told the deputy that someone named Ricky Bobby had thrown a tire iron at him that had come through the window of the front-end loader and hit him in the head.

The man said his neighbor from across the street then pepper sprayed him.

The deputy walked across the street to talk to the neighbor, who told him his bathtub faucet had broken and water was going everywhere. He said he was driving to the end of the road to turn off the water when the girlfriend of the man with the front-loader was driving very slowly in front of him, so he yelled at her to get out of the way.

The neighbor said that after he turned off the water and returned to his trailer, the guy with the front-end loader started “running his mouth,” and they got into an argument. He said the guy then left.

The neighbor said when he and his cousin went to the end of the road to turn the water back on, the man with the front-end loader drove at them and tried to run them off the road.

The neighbor said only his cousin was with him, no one named Ricky Bobby, and he denied pepper-spraying the guy with the front loader.

The deputy went back to the front-end loader's owner, who said his girlfriend was upset because the neighbor had “cussed her out," so he drove his motorcycle to the neighbor’s house, and they had an argument.

He said the neighbor had a can of mace and grabbed a tree limb and threatened him, so he left and went into a nearby junkyard.

He said his neighbor and Ricky Bobby threatened to “tear up his motorcycle,” so he got into his front-end loader. He said when he drove it to through gate of the junkyard, Ricky Bobby threw a tire iron at him.

He said he continued to drive, and his neighbor caught up with him and pepper-sprayed him.

The deputy said he again tried unsuccessfully to locate anyone named Ricky Bobby.

The deputy asked the neighbor again if he had pepper-sprayed the man with the front-end loader, and the neighbor admitted he did but said it was because he was disabled and feared for his life.

The deputy concluded his report saying he was still unable to identify anyone named Ricky Bobby.

He said the neighbors gave conflicting statements and there were no witnesses, so no one was arrested.

It is clear from Upstate police reports just how much time law enforcers put into sorting out people's problems, and that some, in the end, seem to make no sense
