Ohio State is quickly becoming a thorn in our side

Mar 26, 2013, 10:00 PM

They are trying to learn more of our offense. They are after Deshaun Watson. Demarre Kitt has them in his top four along with Clemson. It's already well known these two want to play together. If we lose these two to the OSU, Urban's going to be right up there with the ball sack as far as annoyance goes...

Far too early to worry I suppose, just don't see the advantage in sharing our offense with a university that we are competing with for highly regarded recruits in this area...

Learning our offense and actually implementing it are 2 different things. It takes years of recruiting to a certain personnel. You don't just up and say you want to go to a certain system.

It would be like us saying we want to switch it up and go Power I when our personnel has been built around this system. It would be like Oregon saying we want to run a power grind it out offense.

You can't just take one trip somewhere and figure it out. You have to have

1. Coaches who can develop at a high level
2. Coaches who can recruit that talent at a high level
3. Coaches who can execute that game plan and not be afraid to call a 40 yard go route on the 1 yard line on 4th and 1. Its a mindset. Its a balls to the walls let grip it and rip it type mindset.

We have all 3 right now in the football program.

Urban has his own style already. I think we are seeing

Mar 26, 2013, 10:12 PM

Urban go after kids in the south. he knows that the speed of kids down here is different than the kids in the midwest...that's just a fact.

I think its aweswome that we are recruiting head to head against Ohio State. It shows that Dabo has moved the program in the right direction.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Urban already runs a similar offense that is a spread option

Mar 26, 2013, 10:17 PM [ in reply to Re: Ohio State is quickly becoming a thorn in our side ]

Power is a terrible comparison...OSU isn't Alabama.

Urban is a proven coach with a national title under his belt. His recruiting prowess speaks for itself. Recruits wanna play for guys that can take them all the way and Urban has proven he could do that.

Didn't he go undefeated last season?

I would share scratch piece of paper with them...but that's just me.

Mar 26, 2013, 11:21 PM

yep I agree there. Cant believe we'd do this. think Urb would share anythign with Clemson if we asked. Not hardly

They said the meetings were a two-way street

Mar 27, 2013, 11:10 AM

Our staff was learning from tOSU's as well. I don't think we'd invite them down if we weren't getting anything out of the meeting.

Uhm, If I was a salesman, and I am, I think I would sell

Mar 26, 2013, 10:11 PM

Kitt and Watson on the fact that OSU came to Clemson...........not the other way around.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I suppose that true...but what else would he sell these

Mar 26, 2013, 10:20 PM

recruits?

He could easily say that the brains behind the O is Chad Morris and his future here will be over as soon as a top program comes calling. Urban is there to stay at OSU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, if Morris leaves,Urban says you can now come play for

Mar 26, 2013, 10:47 PM

us because we spent a whole day with Morris at Clemson. Or Dabo says, you can still come to Clemson to play because we have a stable and a half full of receivers and Coach Scott spent three years with Coach Morris. Oh, and by the way, Coach Meyer didn't do so hot after Coach Mullen left the swamp and went to Mississippi State.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One more thing, as far as recruiting. We are now in the deep

Mar 26, 2013, 10:52 PM

end of the pool!!!!!!!We better get better!!

With DABO in the lifeguard chair I ain't worried ! He just won't let us drown !

You mean he didn't do so well after

Tim Tebow graduated and went to the NFL.

We learned it from Nevada

Mar 27, 2013, 9:09 AM [ in reply to Uhm, If I was a salesman, and I am, I think I would sell ]

I hope Watson doesn't have slot machines in his top 5.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Haha, but we rarely go neck and neck with a recruit

Mar 27, 2013, 9:37 AM

between Clemson and Nevada. Urban knows the talent in the deep south and will continue to recruit from this area.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm worried too

Mar 26, 2013, 10:15 PM

Meyer rapidly turned osu in to a version of his Utah/uf offenses...without his players. If any team could pick up our system it's them, and they are a front runner for title game in '13. We were a better offense after visits to ok st and Nevada, we have the highest paid oc for a reason. I don't like giving Meyer's goons inside information, are our guys going to visit osu to watch Meyer's practice? Would chip Kelly while at oregon let Meyer visit?

This is a dog eat dog world and the best coaches are theives.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I'm worried too

Mar 26, 2013, 10:29 PM

I don't care to share anything with URban and Ohio State either.

In regards to Chip Kelly, he actually did let Meyer come and visit. Of course that was when Meyer was working for ESPN and I think Meyer went up there to do some segment for ESPN regarding Oregon and their offense.

Re: I'm worried too

Mar 26, 2013, 10:30 PM

For the salesman up above in addition to saying OSU came here, we can also play them the footage of Urban saying Clemson is a great place and should go to a BCS game at least 2 out of every 5 years or whatever it was he said when he was calling I believe the Auburn game a few years ago.

Re: Ohio State is quickly becoming a thorn in our side

Mar 26, 2013, 10:44 PM

I have a ton of respect for him as a coach on the field. He knows how to get players exactly for his system, and more importantly, he gets quality coaches and makes them all better.

However, during my recruiting process I went to Florida and lost all respect for him as a person...bad mouthing other programs/coaches directly, using his fine a$$ daughter as a recruiting "guide" (she happened to come to Tech, playing volleyball), and just his overall demeanor really rubbed me the wrong way. I was no 5* recruit by any means haha one of my good buddies got an official there and somehow convinced them to let me tag along, but it was a good experience to see first hand how he dominated recruiting in Florida (where I went to high school). Basically, he will do WHATEVER it takes to get a recruit. Dabo, I personally feel, will not go against his morals/principles to do so. Hopefully our recruits are of enough character to see through Urban's bull$hit.

And is he really in OSU for the "long haul" or will he have another mysterious heart murmur when things get a little tough? ;)

But I agree, him at a financial power like tOSU scares the ever loving $hit out of me. But I doubt anyone wants a shot at Saban more than him, which could be interesting and could finally muzzle the SEC homerons. The MNC will be the SEC#1 vs any undefeated/one-loss...so I doubt we'll see them anytime soon.

Go Tigers!

Re: Ohio State is quickly becoming a thorn in our side

Mar 27, 2013, 3:13 AM

Thanks for sharing. Good stuff. Any coaches in particular he bad mouthed? Care to share what was mentioned?

I don't think Urban will have any heart problems at Ohio State. All he has to do in the Big Ten is pretty much beat Michigan each year and he will go undefeated. He seems to be the only coach in that league getting a good mix of speedy Florida guys. And combine that with the big OL guys that come out of OH, Michigan and Pennsylvania each year he will build teams better than any of his Florida teams.

Re: Ohio State is quickly becoming a thorn in our side

Mar 27, 2013, 3:10 AM

He's going to do remarkably well in the down B1G. His path to the championship is going to be a lot easier if the rest of the competition doesn't step it up, but if he doesn't field significantly better teams than his first OSU team, or his last Florida team, then his days of actually winning the championship are over.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ole Spud is on to something, for like him I've been

Mar 27, 2013, 4:57 AM

in sales for a long time, and while we may visit and talk among ourselves, most of the talk is what I like to call "side stepping"....We're only going to show and say the obvious...while carefully guarding our "trade secrets." You can bet that the OSU staff only got a blurry glimpse into our capabilities.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's right, they only learned what they could have gleened

Mar 27, 2013, 8:46 AM

from film study.

Morris is like a fox. He probably gave those hounds nothing.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a 2-way street. We have their offensive staff

Mar 27, 2013, 8:57 AM

in our place - in our comfort zone and outside of theirs. Our OC (and our offensive staff) has the chance to pick and probe their guys. Is there something we can use as an advantage in recruiting those guys?

We have a pretty bright guy ourselves in Chad Morris. I would think he knows how to handle himself in these situations and if there is any advantage to be gained, he is the most likely to gain it.

Its a great compliment!!! Meyer taking lessons from Swinney.***
