Notre Dame Did To Clemson

What Clemson used to do to opponents. Line up and punch them in the mouth. Physical smash mouth football. We're going to run it between the tackles and you can't stop us. The real shock of that loss was how Clemson got manhandled. There is no easy fix for any of the problems I see -- QB, DL, OL, WR. At this point, I'm really wondering how Clemson got to 8-1. This team will either respond to the beating it took in South Bend with better effort or it will continue to crumble. The entire evening was summed up with the total lack of effort of blocking on the blocked punt. Knew it was coming and still did an ole' block.

Exactly my point on Twitter this morning.
Iron Mike said it best “everyone has plan until they get punched in the mouth” and ND dang sure punched us in the mouth. #80 killed the first drive with 2 holds and atrocious blocking on the pass outside to Ship. I remember when our outside blocking on the bubble screens was devastatingly effective, no more.

I disagree that Clemson used to line up and cram the ball down opponents throat. The Clemson offense used to spread the field with quality receivers and use a balanced attack. More times than not we had more passing yards than running.

Think the reference is to before spread offense.

Clemson ran an offense years back similar to Alabama before they went pass happy (AL still has talent all over the field I should add). Still remember Raymond Priester running at will against SC at the end of a game during Ford era, and that was the norm. Also, this approach opened up the passing game when you wanted to hit the opponent hard by hitting the passes. You tackle a bruising RB all game and it creates opportunities for the offense especially as the game progresses. It used to be the run game opened up the passing game. Then college football inverted to passing to open up run (FSU was at forefront in the day).
I have contended for some time that DJU could run an offense like ND ran last night, and it would take the heat off him. Also, having an OL like ND makes for a much better opportunity for the QB. Face it, DJU is not a good RPO QB. It often looks like he guesses his reads and does not actually make good real-time reads. Every now and then he guesses right. Why we have not tried to adapt the offense to fit him better is what surprises me.
In my opinion, we have not seen enough of Cade to know if he can consistently run the offense we are now using. One thing is for sure, if we stay vanilla like we are now and not get creative, it will not work. We are not a hard team to scout and gameplan against as I see it. When we had a Deshaun or Trevor, talent took over and you get by with minimal change, but we are relatively easy to prepare for at present.
Defensively, we did not play awful until special teams and offensive problem after problem deflated the mind-set we were hanging in there well. Again, when you are not getting help and you are trying to tackle 7 and 3 behind a solid ND OL all night, it will accomplish what we saw. Our DC can say what he wants but our defense was worn down at the end last night and struggling to tackle. Way too many tackles by the secondary guys as 7 and 3 ran through arm tackles up front and from backers.
Nuff said ... as I just had to add to the thread which I rarely do.

I hate to single out individuals, but our inexperienced linebackers have to take some of the blame. When the DL is getting double teamed or, at least, occupying the OL, the backers have to fill the holes and make the tackles. A lot of missed tackles, again, last night.
