My take on Nkemdiche and the AJC...
Jul 9, 2012, 9:14 AM

Clemson fans are a little upset that Nkemdiche would even intimate that he would ever look at another school, and are a little embarrassed that their #1 recruit would make some slightly unwise comments. Instead of saying anything against the prized recruit, however, they are taking out their frustration on the writer who got the quotes.
It's understandable and predictable partisan fan behavior. Fans of any school would react the same. Nkemdiche will go to Clemson, and all this will be forgotten, except by Gamecock fans, who will run it into the ground.

...that the writer took the quotes and used them to create a "RN holds Clemson hostage" story. RN was essentially daydreaming about a "gosh, it would be great" scenario which was perverted into "Do this or I'm gone" by the AJC.
The NYT story wrapped it up pretty well, BTW.
Me, I'm torked at the editor of the story. Kids may say dumb things (and in hindsight, I bet RN will be far more circumspect in talking to media from now on) and a reporter may misunderstand what is said, or fail to ask all-too-important followup questions. Happens quite often, in fact.
But at a paper of the AJC's size, there's another layer of editing that takes place. Were I that editor, the first question I'd ask that wasn't covered in the original story, is "what does RN say he'll do if Clemson doesn't offer Carter? We know what he says it means if they do ... but what if they don't?"
The answer, as we now know is that RN would remains firm to Clemson. But not asking that question created a mini-firestorm this weekend and caused a lot of people more grief than need be.
And THAT is what has folks upset.

Again, maybe there's a different article than the one I see. But I got no sense from the article that it was "Do this or I'm gone". Not even close. I read the article and that didn't even cross my mind until I went to FGF and saw what those morons were saying.

That's fair. The article up now isn't what was there Friday.

The headline is also somewhat less incendiary than "No. 1 recruit holds Clemson hostage" flavor it originally held.

I'm surprised it took so long for someone to tell me that. That's a horse of a different color!

The media lies!!!!!
Whenever anything seemingly negative happens it is either:
a) actually a positive,
b) byproduct of some sort of conspiracy (ESecPN), or
c) coots!

I think the AJC published it word for word. The context was open to interpretation but not skewed. It wasn't just FGF making comments; it was a national story.
Bottom line: The kid just got a hard lesson in media relations. The only way it will be ever brought up again is if he decommits for one reason or another.

if you want to do this and get your friend an offer you talk to coaches not reporters. that is the only aspect that irked me. now granted the reporter pried it out of him but still don't mention it except to the coaches.

Sports writers hounding these high school kids. But that seems to be the accepted practice now, and very few fans seem to have a problem with it. Most fans want all the information they can get.
So yes, these "kids" have to grow up fast in terms of dealing with media.

I think that its a shame that a savvy reporter would use his/her skills of years in the making on an unsuspecting kid. Regardless of what anyone says, its a savvy reporter duping a "KID"!!!

savvy reporter took advantage of RK's quotes and used them. That upsets you. Fine. But what do you say when a recruit speaks with clarity and reason and with caution to his words? You say, "Wow, I was impressed with his interview skills. He's a good speaker." You don't credit the reporter for pulling out such an impressive interview, you credit the recruit or player. Bottom line, RK learned a lesson on how to deal with the media. Next time he'll be more careful.
