Newton, CT.

Upon returning home on this sun dappled afternoon, I learned of what is one of the most horrific and confusing events in American history. Nineteen children and 8 teachers were shot and killed at school this morning. Why? Why? Why? WHY?! Those were nineteen children. Possibly nineteen Josh Hamilton’s, possibly nineteen Einstein’s, nineteen future citizens, nineteen future leaders, nineteen children who will never have a goodnight story read to them again by their parents. Eight more people with families, who they will never see again, but none of this answers the question. The truth is, we never will answer the question, because the question is unanswerable. There is no logical explanation to how someone could ever do this, whether in, or out, of their right minds.

While the question can’t be answered, we have to do our best to fix what we can, while we can. Maybe this is the wake-up call our quarrelling nation needs. So many people today don’t get along over the smallest things. Why dislike someone because they don’t agree with your political views? Why give someone the cold shoulder because they’re a Mormon, and you’re a Christian? Why give someone a dirty glance because they’re skin is a little bit darker than yours? Think back to when YOU were in elementary school, could you have cared less about if someone was a republican or a democrat? These were children, honest, and innocent, two traits that we have an extreme lack of these days.

Today, our nation weeps for these children and their families, but what about tomorrow? Tomorrow we will go back our arguments, back to our incessant ramblings over gun control, but why? Why can’t we finally stop and say enough is enough? I will put my best foot forward to living life to the fullest, and putting aside silly rivalries, because who knows how long we have? Let’s not forget these children and teachers, let us instead let the memory of them help us change our actions for the better. Glory to God in the good, and the bad.

While I agree with your platitudes...

and I have wept for the children and families because I have 3 that age and could never imagine how devastating something like that would be, however, to say let’s just put aside our differences and get along takes a very simplistic view of the world that is not a reality of being an adult. Children have that luxury, but "living life to the fullest" is different for everyone and some trying to, for example, take away guns, may be interfering with me, or someone else "living life to the fullest." I certainly agree that we spend way too much time focusing on the things that divine and not the things that unite, but when there are those who have made it their mission to infringe upon my right to "live life to the fullest" I cannot simply put "aside silly rivalries" because they are much more than that.
