https://news.yahoo.com/most-voters-biden-trump-both-225000542.html
In a few hours I will vote for the only possible candidate I can vote for in good conscious. The only one who I don't think is an absolute nut, or demented, or both. It will likely be my last vote for President in this cycle, and that's an AMERICAN problem, not a pub, dem, Biden, or Trump problem.
Anyway, off to a bonafide Facebook Coach destination for a family weekend. Yall take care.

We have to fix the primary system, IMO

It's why we get such trash radical candidates on both sides. And they're usually already rigged by the parties.
I voted for Haley on Saturday in early voting. Like you, assuming she doesn't win, I won't be voting for president this fall.

but I think the driving force in our political dysfunction lies in the entertainment of it. Wrote a thesis for Woodard on it 30 years ago and I think the premise is still true.
Back then, I was a fine upstanding member of the College Republicans and listening to Rush one day, as I laughed at him skewering the Clintons it struck me that this isn’t radio journalism, this is entertainment. As I listened over the months, with a more critical ear, it dawned on me that the left is going to eventually produce an anti-rush..and they’ll have to be as bombastic and entertaining as he was. Air America (lulz)came a good bit later, failed miserably, but tried. Love him or hate him, Rush was a juggernaut.
Back to the point, CNN was doing 24 hr war coverage and the first Iraq war was a snoozer and I correctly assumed they’d start filling in with political shows. With political entertainment steaming into the television market they had to make it watchable so they leaned heavy into entertaining talking heads that could make a pretty dull subject more fantastic. A few years later, here comes Roger Aileswith his brainchild and it takes off. While political tv was far from interesting in the beginning, it hadto be more entertaining. People aren’t entertained by boring movies, Meemaws didn’t watch soaps with no romance and drama. The entertainment aspect had to get heightened and when that happens you get farther and farther from reality and the loudest, shiniest, most absurd people have the stage. Which was my point back then. Real politics is going to get overshadowed by the absurdity of entertainment, which viewers will like, but critically thinking folk will hate, and candidates will have to become more “made for tv” looking and polarizing. Which is was always will be bad for Murica. Woodard loved the part about tv dumbing down critical thinking for the masses, but pretty much sh@t allover the rest of it. But I was more right than wrong.
I did have a short section on what could happen with the internet, but Lawd who could’ve predicted how exponentially stupid it was going make people.
I wrote too much. TLDR

"Life's hard, Woodard's hard. Life doesn't give you extra credit - Woodard doesn't give you extra credit. Life doesn't grade on a curve - Woodard doesn't grade on a curve."
Learned a lot from that man. If you got an A in his class, you EARNED that A. And I got A's in all of the classes I took with him, I'm proud to say. I graduated in 91, so I took him before cable news was what it is now, and well before the internet, so none of that was factored into anything.
I just wish I'd followed his career advice for me, but that ship has sailed!
I was scheduled one semester to take a class from Marty Slann, "Politics of the Soviet Union," but before the semester started, the Soviet Union disappeared! I don't remember what I did instead of that.... Good times back in the PoSc dept!

Democrats would not allow RFK, Jr. to run in the Democrat primary.
That is how Biden ‘wins’ a plurality of primary votes.
Remind me again, where is this democracy of which you write?

Just looked and it's not true. RFK Jr. was allowed and did in fact run as a Democrat, but voluntarily withdrew on Oct. 9, 2023.

Look at the sociopathic things Trump did while in govt, no less
1
Feb 22, 2024, 10:35 AM
|
|
I know. Trump cheated on his first wife by going after Jill, who was the wife of his best friend.
Then, after Trump’s despondent first wife caused a head on collision with a truck, Trump used the tragedy for his political advantage by blaming it the trucker, who Trump broadcasted foe decades as having ‘drank his lunch.’ Thereby, ruining the life of an innocent truck driver.
Trump then enlists his crackhead son to be the bag collector in his policies-for-sale scheme during his decades in the Senate and his 8 years as VP. Great way to help a crackhead son to recover; keep the son on the road, being wined and dined by foreign interests who used the son as a conduit to get special benefits from our federal government. This is fatherly love in deeds instead of just cheap talk.
Finally, Trump, embarrassed that his crackhead son knocked up a hooker (who subsequently gave birth to Trump’s seventh grandchild), denied the existence of this illegitimate granddaughter.
What a sociopath, this Trump guy. And every bit of it while in service of the government.

A defense of our current worthless president?
But you're right: Trump is a POS sociopath. Anyone who adores someone of his character should also have their own character brought into question.
It's maybe the same kind of person who pretends to be a "Christian" while implying that someone he disagreed with here had incestual relations with his underage daughter. Now who woulda done that?

I don’t adore him or his character. The policies he enacted while president were effective and good for America. Housing costs were lower. Interest rates were lower. Food costs were lower. Gas was cheaper. Everything was cheaper. It’s as simple as that for me. Another perk was that this psychotic trans movement wasn’t nearly as prevalent.

Well, of course, my post was directed at RTD.
The items you listed were great... but you're falsely attributing that to Trump. He didn't cause those things, and he helped to eliminate them with the Covid relief (for which Biden also shares the blame). We can thank our inflation on the last two presidents. His policies were bad for the free market and economy, and if he wins and puts the tariffs back, we'll see more rising costs.
I remember the trans thing getting a lot of traction during his presidency, particularly the bathroom debate. I dare argue that the trans stuff was even a response to his presidency.

Then who caused them? Right before the pandemic happened interests rates on mortgage loans were among the lowest they had ever been.
Houses were 35-50% cheaper. Gas was right at 2$, at least in upstate sc where I live. That was 3 years into his presidency. If he didn’t help cause that who did? Middle class family incomes increased by 6,000$, 5 times more than the Obama administration. Incomes rose in every single metro area in the United States for the first time in nearly 3 decades. The bottom 50 percent of American households saw a 40 percent increase in net worth. His deregulation policies and middle class tax cuts were part of that. He pulled us out of NAFTA. His administration’s policies are the reason everything was rolling. I could keep going but I have to get back to work.

The economy was on a major upward swing as Trump took office. Do you want to credit Obama? Yeah, didn't think so. And you shouldn't.
Trump's tax breaks were great short term but will be bad long term.
The thing a president can best do with the economy is to leave it the #### alone. Trump did much of his whole time in office (except the stupid tariffs)... until Covid. Then he and then later Biden did something phenomenally stupid: print more money. And here we are.

We need to get back to our republican (not party) roots and use Article V to force Congress to do what they will otherwise never do. Balance a budget, and serve limited terms.
Otherwise, there is no recourse for the people. We all know how this ends.

But I think one of the major parties' front-runners is a very good candidate, who has done a good job with our economy, dealing with the pandemic, and tackling major issues with incrementally good solutions. He's very old, and he's not a great speaker. But in terms of decision-making, I think he's been a good president. The other guy running against him doesn't believe in Democracy.
I don't think this is a bad field. I think there is one person that shouldn't be running.
