My two cents

Oct 18, 2021, 7:18 PM

As the season passes and things get worse, everyone is a expert on what is wrong and how to correct it. Count me in. However, over the last few weeks, I have come to the conclusion [ in my mind anyway] that our problems have a root in one problem and one problem only.
Look at our coaching staff and how nearly every critical coaching role has bee replaced over the past 3-4 years - with mostly CU grads and former players. We have a tight end coach, running back coach, quarterback coach with no coaching experience. I like Elliott but have to put him in same category as when Scott left, Elliott was left on his own and dropped his role as running back coach. Boyd, Grisham, Streeter and more... I love Dabo but my fear is he is so loyal to his players and coaches he will be stubborn at any admission of fault or disposition for change. I also think this problem has existing for nearly three years but the coaching deficiency was masked by generational players such as Trevor, ETN, and great receivers. The exposure during these past years was not apparent playing mediocre ACC teams but getting blown away by OSU and LSU. ACC is up this year and we will be very lucky to not have a couple more loses. Hope I am wrong.

Hello DFMCM, enjoyed reading your respectfully worded post.

I agree that the offense's output has not improved (the scoreboard numbers tell that story), but several fundamentals of the offense have improved. O-Line ... if Rayburn comes back soon ... has clearly improved since the NC State game. WRs are still a worry, but they did not drop as many passes against Syracuse as they did in every other game. TE play was outstanding (that had not happened this year prior to Davis Allen's great game against Syracuse). RB play was quite good. DJ is developing (moves better in the pocket; does not panic to the same degree as he did during first 2 games against P5 opponents; has quickly learned to take snaps from under Center ... something that he never did in HS or in his freshman year with us; has learned to run when the lanes open up and has done so with positive effect.)

Coaching staff and 'homespun' appearance. My guess is that Dabo prizes long term presence for assistance coaches. He has developed an organizational culture that is apparent to coaches throughout the college football world ... i.e., that if you do a good job or if you work hard (which is where I think that T.Grisham / B.Streeter / CJ Spiller are), then Dabo's culture will be patient. Staff continuity has been very very good for Clemson. Rare places like Alabama can endure staff T/O; most other famously good football schools suffer significantly for a year or two when there is T/O in the staff.

BTW and IMO, Caldwell is actually a good OL coach; Clemson's O-Line problems stem in part because of relative small numbers of OL on the team. FYI, NC State has ~ 21 OL on their team; Clemson has ~ 16 OL on our team. Any misses or injuries or transfers hurt Clemson's OL disproportionately vs that of other schools.

it's worth half that

Unless something changes between now and Saturday, we are headed for a beatdown like the 2012 Orange Bowl game. Pitsburg will remember the beatdown we gave them last year when we had a real 5-Star Qb, don't know what we have now but they have a real 5-Star Qb. The defense can only hold up so long.
