My Letter to Dan Radakovich - Radio Announcer

Sep 29, 2014, 5:53 PM

Dear Mr. Radakovich,

I am usually not in the broadcast area which allows me to listen to Tiger football. Listening to the Tiger announcing team is so much nicer than the usual ESPN pairing, or it was until yesterday. I was unable to watch the game live on Saturday and caught the replay on SportSouth last night, with the Clemson play by play. Awful commentary, just awful. Go hire a high school coach and tell him he can comment on the game like he would review film of an upcoming opponent with his team. It would be much better.

Why can’t the “Voice of the Tigers” call players by name instead of by their numbers; does he not know the players? And why no excitement in the voice? Do you remember the actor who played the science teacher on “The Wonder Years?” Ben Stein’s character would do a better job announcing our games.

I grew up in a time when we made very few games and none of our games were on TV, so Jim Phillips was the voice of Clemson for my youth. While I attended Clemson as a student, we tuned in to away games and felt like we were there even when we didn’t travel. I loved listening to the games and could picture the game action by just listening. Old Johnstone Hall was rocking during the Clemson-Georgia game in 1980 (in Athens) because we could see the action in our mind’s eye because of the vivid descriptions by Mr. Phillips. My soon-to-be father in-law said there weren’t many games he had attended in person that were more exciting than listening to that game. We were both exhausted by the end of the game. It’s difficult to follow a great announcer, but Pete Yanity did bring a sense of excitement to the game whenever I was able listened. Yesterday was some of the worst I’ve ever heard, just plain dull.

Dan, please work to find an announcer that brings games to life for those who can’t be there or watch on TV. If I hadn’t been working on something that kept me from watching 100%, I would have just watched with the sound off. Tiger sports are too valuable to leave the broadcast descriptions to someone who sounds like they are reading lab results from a colonoscopy.

Yeah, I agree - this was a bigtime mistake......

making this guy our announcer.

I'm 55 years old, so Jim Phillips was the radio voice I

Sep 29, 2014, 8:46 PM

listened to from my freshman year at Clemson in 1977 until his death in 2003. Jim had a great voice for sports play by play. Pete Yanity did not. He was terrible. The only reason it was not such a big deal over the last 12 years was due to almost every game being on TV, so if you were not at the game TV was the best option. Yanity's "there's orange in the endzone" drove me crazy.

Radio play by play is not nearly as critical as it was 30 years ago due to TV, and getting quality play by play guys is a difficult task with today's media coverage. It really is a lost art, and not nearly the attractive job it was 30 years ago.

Another big change in the last 30 years is

Sep 29, 2014, 9:01 PM

that networks are now owned by out of market conglomerates where profit is everything. This is why you do not see the "school" announcer anymore, but rather a different guy for every sport. It's why a truly good PBP guy like Wes Durham was at Georgia Tech is now doing TV games for RAYCOM. Couldn't make the money he can in TV. The ACC still has some of the best; Bob Harris at Duke, Gary Hahn at State, Stan Cotton at Wake, Gene Deckerhoff at FSU, but they are all older and have been in place a long, long time. When they retire they'll be just like us

Even though I despise UGA, Munson, in my opinion, was by far the best radio announcer ever.

Larry 'Munson was absolutely the best PBP announcer. He was a 100% " homer" unapologetically so...he painted an image in your mind and you almost felt like you were there. Jim Phillips was just as awesome, I always felt as if I were sitting there watching. I never thought much of Bob Fulton until he called the first series or so of a Clemson game in honor of his friend, Jim Phillips! Class acts all 3.

Agree on Bob Fulton. Class act and great announcer.

We're not the only university to take a major step back in PBP announcing.

I totally agree with you.

I listened to the last quarter and the broadcast was just plain awful. Mr. Radakovich, the current broadcast team just isn't getting it done. Please save us and insist that the station make a change quickly.

Mike Eppley was great color man. Could Tim B do PBP?***

No time for Tim B to do football radio. He will be very, very busy arranging interviews for Mr. Watson during his 2015 Heisman season.

Tim B's got 10 times the voice....he's got my vote***

I know everyone here is going to criticize

Sep 29, 2014, 11:39 PM

every announcer on wccp, but I think Philpot is great. Well prepared and very professional. He would be my pick.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If it's that bad it will take care of itself

Sep 29, 2014, 11:45 PM

No one will listen and the sponsors/ad money will dry up!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the thing.. People will still listen if they

Sep 30, 2014, 8:51 AM

watch.

I thought it was pretty bad too.. Was hoping that he's still getting into the swing of things so to speak.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

GO TIGERS!!

After his first game people complained because

Sep 30, 2014, 10:04 AM

Munson was "too excited", "he yells too much". Now people are complaining becuase he isn't EXCITED ENOUGH. I certainly don't think he is perfect, but he;s not as bad as some on here want to make him seem. I'm fine with what I've heard so far, understanding that he will get better with experience.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's pretty aweful.

Sep 30, 2014, 10:39 AM

Also, if he changed because of folks whining after the first game - he really needs to go.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.
