Moar boatnet - Hydraulic steering update

May 26, 2022, 11:57 AM

I started looking more closer at my hydraulic steering (just installed). There are two dates located on separate parts...199effin8 and 200effin2. I talked to Dometic (Seastar) and he confirmed those dates based on the casting and the cylinder is who knows how old. The helm may be new, not sure.

So....used hydraulic steering like this is worth about $250. They put new hydraulic lines and maybe the new helm piece....so max cost was $500 materials for what is $1250 new.

On a level from Levon on a Thursday night to clemsonrulez08® after discovering IE posted his address in TNET, how enraged should I be?

tigermanac® mad after a 4 day bender.

Dude straight f'ed you with an old cylinder that has new seals in it-Maybe.

My concern would be how long you can buy parts for it, and also that you didn't want used parts.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm just worried these parts aren't going to hold out, and

May 26, 2022, 12:11 PM

you'll end up broke down in the middle of the lake, and your cute li'l face is going to get all sun burned.

Something should get raped.

Levon wears his war wound like a crown

May 26, 2022, 12:23 PM [ in reply to What’s Levon got to do got to do with this? ]

and calls his child Jesus...

And Jesus, he wants to go to Venus and leave Levon far behind. Take a balloon and go sailing while Levon, Levon slowly dies...

That would #### anyone off I think.

You know what’s up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would be fighting angry, like I'll burn his shop down if

May 26, 2022, 12:57 PM

you don't give me new steering angry. Don't think I'd have them install it, but I'd want them to provide me with new parts. I'm sure the guy will say he quoted installing a rebuilt system instead of new though, even if it was implied you were getting a brand new system.

They used words like "getting the parts from our supplier"

May 26, 2022, 1:04 PM

and "shipping", but it looks like their supplier was facebook marketplace.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the tough part about situations like this

May 26, 2022, 1:12 PM

If it were anything else other than my boat, I'd take everything back up to them, be a total assshole and demand they make it right or take their old BS steering back/refund my money.....but that's going to cost you a few weeks without a boat at minimum, and they're probably going to park it under the nastiest tree they can find for the duration of your boats stay just for aggravating them even though they're clearly in the wrong.

Threaten lawyers, better business bureau, blog posts, etc. It was implied new parts?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our conversations went like this

May 26, 2022, 1:49 PM

Me - "Hey, I want to replace the cable with hydraulic steering"

Them - "Do you know how much hydraulic steering is?"

Me - "About $800 for the entry level kit"

Them - "Ok, I'll get you a quote and let you know tomorrow"

Them - "Ok, it's going to run $1,950. I will get with our supplier and order the parts and they should be in next week"......So I am assuming they are using seastar and not baystar, that's cool, better quality. I ask them what brand and they say "Dometic"....well Dometic makes seastar and baystar.

Me - "Sounds great"

So it was actually 3 weeks later, not 1 week later. And they spilled hydraulic fluid and got greas on the carpet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, I would demand a full refund and take it somewhere

May 26, 2022, 1:54 PM

else to have the repairs done. That's BS.

One thought: before you confront them you may want to ask whether they used new or used parts. If they lie then you know it was not a misunderstanding.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

TIME OUT.

May 26, 2022, 1:54 PM

Those MF charged you all that and put in used parts? AND spilled grease on yo carpet?

I'd return with either the boat or photos and ask for some splaining. The only possible outcomes here are a) they redo the work with new parts, b) they give you a bunch of money back, or c) be subject to an online smear campaign AND a large shop fire. Then you never return and still give them bad online reviews.

F people like that. F 'em with a power pole.
